The UI is atrocious, but that's (usually) easy enough to modify. At least the aesthetic of it. Not to mention there's time to fix it.

What really worries me is the word count thing. ~450k words at 40-50 hours of gameplay (doing everything, apparently) means there has to be a lot of time on things other than dialogue, and I suspect it's mostly combat.
I say this because the average completionist run in PS:T is 62 hours, and IIRC my first playthrough was around the 50h mark, which is roughly the "Main+Extras" run. The thing is, PS:T had almost 2 times the word count (800k+), so it's not the writing that's making TTON almost as long.

Sure, it had to be expected with a turn-based system (which I voted against, before anyone thinks I'm a hypocrite), but there's TB combat and TB combat. The bright side for the devs is that as long as the combat and the story aren't horrible, the completion rate should be longer than PoE's.

This "word count" stuff is bogus. Look at the stream, does this look like a game that doesn't have a shit-ton of writing? It makes PoE look terse. And the opening of PS:T, too.

Because these numbers are totally untethered to anything in reality (the completion time is speculative, the word count is sort of meaningless without knowing the degree of branching, etc.), I wasn't paying a lot of attention, but I think the 450k words is the beta and the 40-50 hours is the full game. The full game has a lot more than 450k words -- my understanding is that it will end up well over a million.

Crises.

That has nothing to do with length. It can be extremely word for as long as it lasts.

1m sounds a lot better, but 450k in a beta? That's ~25 hours of reading on average. Even if people only get to read half if you consider branching, that's 12-13 hours of reading.

I'm pleased to announce that we'll be releasing the Early Access to our @kickstarter beta backers tomorrow.

*watches video expecting to see some tutorial stuff*

*first half hour of the game is a literal battleground for your character's mind and sanity, with the villain casually dropping by*

:what:

I mean it looks great (particularly the puzzle-like approach to combat), but what ever happened to pacing and build-up?

Good! I'm glad somebody is trying to experiment with RPG structure.

Would build up even work in this game? The plot is already kinda spoiled by virtue of it being a torment game, and was explicitly spoiled during the kick starter.

Fairfax This whole thing reminds me of Michael Crichton's critique of the Drake Equation. (I don't endorse Crichton's politics or even writing, it just is a useful reference point.) The exact number of words in the game is uncertain and sure to change; the length of the game (or even the beta) is even less certain; and the percentage of words a player will see is conjecture. I'm not sure if you'd be comforted by more words or fewer. I think there are plenty of words in it, but the real question is whether they are good or not. Twenty million bad words are not worth a good haiku.

It's crazy how much better the portraits look now than they did in the alpha preview just months ago. The more modest Calli portrait really makes the difference between a tacky or superb character design. Based on everything shown in the IGN preview, i don't think i could be more pleased in regards to the games visual presentation overall.

Length and word count aren't my concern per se, I just don't want combat to take up too much time.

I wouldn't fret on that score. Also, TTON crises include dialogue and environmental interactions -- they aren't purely combat per se.

I poured 110 USD into this project and I don't have access to beta.
Thank you!

So guys, to those who play the beta: without spoilers please, if
10/10 is the perfect game,
9/10 is PS:T,
7/10 is not quite PS:T, but really good,
5/10 meh, but playable, and
1/10 is the worst garbage ever,
how good is it?

I really like Calistege's portrait but Aligern's hair is killing my soul. I also wished they went for a more vulpine angle with Matkina like she had in that one other portrait cuz she kiiinda looks like the kid who keeps getting their lunch money stolen. The black guy gives me porn star vibes, dunno if that's good or bad yet.

Lots of words, lots of options, the UI does not look like cancer any more. Looking forward to it.

There's a Pat Rothfuss comic that got unlocked for me just now I think. It's called "So long as you can see the moon".

Is it just me or are the quotes that go along with those character portraits not very good ? They seem kind of forced as in trying too hard to sound cool and falling flat...

It's not just you. Also that pink haired woman is really ugly up close. Realistic drawn, just an ugly woman.
