That bothered you? I barely noticed any of that seeing its all an intro and exposition of the setting, while the names are what you would expect... in such a setup.
The rest of the story takes a markedly less epic and more down to earth tone, where epic potential is used with measure, sparely, which i liked and for me - read well and quickly without any facepalms or obvious mistakes in the setup of any situations.
As i said, just like a decent action movie that is nothing super incredible, but doesnt make you feel disgusted with whole humanity like some hollywood blockbusters do.
Unlike, for example, Scott Bakers overblown ego wankery and bullshit and total stupidity in his series "Prince of Nothing".
Which is superficially "better" or wrapped in a better, epic, much more complicated setting, pretentious language and writing style - while inside all of that glittery wrapping its plot, characters and events are a pile of cheap, screaming stupid shit.
Surely, being somewhere in the middle between awesomely incredibly amazing and totally utter shit can be considered good?
Though I cant really say anything for the whole series or Colins overall quality of writing seeing how short the story felt, seeing how all i saw was introduction of the whole plot. And one story, dealing mostly with introduction and plot setup is not enough to judge the complete overall quality of the writer.
Not on the codex of course, but i am speaking theoretically here.
