By a Dutch game company named Weecodelab.

Tribal is a role-playing game featuring traditional CRPG experience with a tactical combat system, where characters plan their actions simultaneously, as the world takes turns. The story-focused gameplay of Tribal is based around the idea of continuous development of the storyline and the World events that regularly influence the ever-changing fantasy world of Rodinia. The latter is fashioned after Slavic mythology and folk tales. Our collective effort is directed towards delivery of a highly interactive and detailed world with a high degree of player freedom and choice-driven events, where people can also play with their friends, socialize and make friends and enemies.

Gameplay
The game consists of a hexagonal 2D world map and many isometric, handcrafted, as well as procedurally generated locations. Event-driven narrative will allow you to travel freely through the world, find places of interest, trade and explore the vast world of Rodinia. When you enter a place of interest or get attacked by an enemy encounter, you’ll find yourself in one of isometric locations, where you can interact with the game world on a more detailed level.

Features
  • The game's lore is inspired by George R.R. Martin’s “Game of Thrones” series. Events take place in a rather unusual Slavic-like environment, enriched with Slavic mythology, folk tales, traditions and real historical events.
  • Tactical gameplay, where players plan actions of all their characters simultaneously, while the world is taking turns during the combat. No need to wait for all your friends and enemies, while they’re taking their turns.
  • Co-op mode available. Play together with friends.
  • Instance based open world with event-driven gameplay, where your choices do matter.
  • Unique art style in isometric perspective, aimed to re-create and improve the style of isometric games from the 90s.

Actually it's a bit confusing because Steam page's feature list understates or omits some highly ambitious features that are written in the official website, such as narrator AI, highly interactive world, tribe and bloodline system, a living world shaped by players, competitive multiplayer elements, etc.. Steam's description sounds like it's a CRPG with multiplayer elements (like DOS), but the official website sounds like it's an online RPG with CRPG narrative aspects. Maybe it's really a vision thing that will be developed in the future and what's written in Steam are about the initial release?

Our vision for Tribal
Tribal is a tactical online role-playing game featuring traditional CRPG experience with a simultaneously turn-based combat system. The story-focused gameplay of Tribal is based around the idea of continuous development of the storyline and the World events that regularly influence the ever-changing fantasy world of Rodinia, the latter is fashioned after Slavic mythology and folk tales. Our collective effort is directed towards delivery of a highly interactive and detailed world with a high degree of player freedom and choice-driven events, where people can also play with their friends, socialize and make friends and enemies. Main features of Tribal include:

osb_1.png

The world of Rodinia
We welcome you to become a part of a truly living fantasy world based on Slavic mythology and folk tales. Discover an immersive world with a large degree of freedom. Explore the lands and learn about historical events or build your estate and become a merchant. Set out on expeditions to distant and dangerous places to find riches and make trophies or unravel ancient secrets in the ruins of the once mighty Veyron Empire. Decide for yourself which side you’re on.

osb_2.png

The Narrator
The Narrator is a unique event generating and linking system that will make each one of your travels in the world of Rodinia unlike any of your previous experiences. Events are generated automatically and even if some parts of your quest could seem familiar to you, your adventure as a whole will be unique. After setting up camp in a forest clearing you could find footprints. Will you follow them? Perhaps the trail will lead you to a mysterious cabin on chicken legs, or you will find yourself in the depth of the woods, where you will stumble upon a hidden colony of leshen. The outcomes will be found in stories that The Narrator has prepared for you.

osb_3.png

A living world
Season changes, floods, volcanic eruptions, wildfire, construction of new settlements and hostilities between kingdoms – everything has an impact on the ever-changing map of Rodinia. As you travel the world, you will see the results of events that have changed the appearance of the map, not only for you, but for all players. Join forces with other players and have a say in how the lands of Rodinia will look – will you help them thrive or will you try to destroy everything in your path?

osb_4.png

Experiment and explore
Tribal is a project that is meant to encourage players to explore and experiment. Therefore, we decided to minimize the routine in our game and build a highly interactive world. The majority of repetitive actions, such as resource harvesting, will be performed by non-playable characters(NPCs), working for you and character leveling is minimized and limited. This way you will have more time for exploration of new lands, experiencing unique World events and follow its storyline. High level of interactiveness with the environment will give players the opportunity to experiment and discover new ways to complete quests and find hidden game mechanics through trial and error.

osb_5.png

Characters, squads and cooperative gameplay
The game allows you to control not only your own character, but a whole squad of characters. Each character has its own past, different skills and physical attributes. In addition, all characters have a certain set of properties that make up their nature. They can even have certain goals or dreams. Be careful when assembling your squad of strangers, because you have no idea what’s truly on their mind. Any character can end up being a traitor and deserter or a loyal friend and a reliable ally. Or you can create a squad with other player-characters that you think you can trust and go on a quest together.

osb_7.png

Turn-based combat system with simultaneous turns
Plan the actions of your squad at the same time as your opponents. Adjust your tactics to counter their decisions beforehand and draw your enemy into a trap. We decided to create a turn-based combat system with simultaneous turns, which will require tactical and strategic thinking from players. When you don’t know what to expect from your opponent, you have no choice but to experiment and adapt your established tactics in every situation. This creates difficult but interesting and thrilling battles.

osb_8.png

Tribes, bloodlines and family estate
All characters in Tribal are mortal, even your protagonist. In order to keep you from losing all of your game progress after the death of your main character, we’ve come up with the tribal and bloodlines systems. You can develop your offspring and specialize your bloodlines to fulfil your gameplay needs. The fame and reputation of your bloodlines is an important factor if you are going to seriously develop your family estate and engage in trade. Hire other characters to work for you: smiths that will craft your equipment, merchants that will enhance the economy of your kin and many other helpful workers that will assist you in the preparation of your campaigns and perform mundane tasks for you. All of your tribe's wealth will stay with you even if you lose your main character with its entire squad. Your kin will always rush to the rescue and help you to continue your journey.

osb_9.png

Clans and player settlements
For those who enjoy political games and strategic wars we have the clan system in place. Players can unite with other tribes(players) and form their own clans. It requires a lot of work to gain the necessary reputation and show loyalty to the crown, if one wants to get permission and build their own settlement in the region. Take part in the political intrigues of Rodinia. Trade and compete with other clans of your principality. Build your clan settlement, develop and protect it from enemy attacks.

osb_10.png

Expeditions
Players can deploy expeditions into distant and uncharted territory. Depending on the destination and mission, your expedition can become an entire operation and require a careful planning and a lot of preparation. Send out a guarded caravan to discover new hunting grounds and unknown territories (hopefully)rich with resources. Search for rare treasures or try to obtain long lost ancient knowledge. Don't forget to set up a fortified camp upon your arrival. Staying in the wilderness for long periods of time is dangerous. You’ll need a reliable base of operations, where your adventurers can rest, replenish their resources and store acquired riches.

osb_12-1.png

Dynamic economy
All settlement, even the ones that belong to clans(players), produce and consume resources depending on their location and inhabitants. Our travel system is designed in such a way that it will require several real days to travel across the world map. This approach creates the necessary conditions to implement a realistic economic model and gives an opportunity for players to pursue peaceful professions. Buy resources and set up your production, trade between settlements, increase your wealth and assemble caravans to build your own trading empire.

osb_11-1.png

Ambushes and bounty hunting
The world of Rodinia is full of danger and players choose their own fate. If you do not want to play by the rules, then perhaps being an outlaw is something for you. Attack other squads and plunder trading caravans, setting up ambushes on the roads and in the woods. Be aware that you might end up with a bounty on your head and people will start looking for you. Think carefully before you decide to go down this path and be ready to live on the run.

osb_13-1.png

Fighting pits
Those who wish to demonstrate their dominance in warfare and earn fame and money should consider fighting pits. You can find special arenas in big cities where your squad will have to fight both dangerous creatures and other squads, including those under the control of other players. Only the best fighters will be able take part in seasonal tournaments and compete for the prestigious champion title.

Anyway, they've been writing devlog: https://playtribal.com/devlog/

According to roadmap from May, a demo and Kickstarter is coming this year. https://playtribal.com/2021/05/29/roadmap-update/

"Tactical online role-playing game". Seems a bit multiplayer-centric.

That's funny thing. All other places say that, older devlog even mentions login screen. But Steam page, supposedly contains most up-to-date info, just says "Co-op mode available" as if singleplayer mode is the main thing.

Yeah anyway, I guess we will find out sooner or later.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
This sounds super ambitious. Turn based MMO is very hard to do because if the weird pacing issues.

Or is it only turn based when around an enemy?

They make it sounds like turn based mode is server wide and not only in combat.

Is it just me or is it always a little disappointing to see "inspired by [INSERT NATIONALITY HERE] folklore." Even if it's an underrepresented or unique origin, I still feel like it's going to be watered down and samey in the Hero-of-A-Thousand-Faces kind of way. The next 10,000th take on Greek mythology could be more interesting than the one semi-politically-charged Igbo game if done well. Even still, I think fantasy is as its best when it draws from a very wide pool of sources.

There's games that do great things with locally-inspired settings, such as Darklands and Thea the Awakening off the top of my head. It's always going to be more of an issue of what you do with your source material moreso than what your source material is.

Games like Kingdom of Amalur have shown us that pulp fantasy can be incredibly generic and boring.

They're Dutch and the folklore is Slavic, therefore the folklore part will be superficial at best.

For example, "Evstahiy" as a spelling of a name in their screenshots looks bad. Slavs have a tradition of using latin, but they don't write like that. Using interslavic would've been best in this case, since it's an attempt at recreating a proto-slavic language. In it, you spell it "Ěvstahij". Their spelling looks "syka blyat" kind of thing - something a russian dota player would write, because russians don't have a latin tradition. It's unnatural, awkward and wrong to any Slavic spelling. It just looks bad, and I've only seen one screenshot. I could never play this game without insurmountable levels of cringe.

This might turn out to be THE most interesting feature. Anyone knows a game that has something like that? Apart from CKII, of course ;)

Kynseed and Star Citizen are planned to have mechanics where you age and die with a successor inheriting belongings but not faction reputation or titles. Don't sleep on Kynseed, I like it a lot.

Development update

Greetings, travelers!

We have some news regarding the development. First – we’ve updated the description of the game on our website. Ideas and plans change during the creative process and it also happened to our game design and priorities. In order to speed up the development, we decided to focus on the single-player component and expand it with online elements later. You can read the new, detailed description of the game on our website. Second - our team capacity has increased from 1.5 FTE's to 6.5!
steamhappy

Also, we would like to emphasize that Tribal was never meant to be distributed as free-to-play. When we created our Steam page, we made a mistake and the game was added to the free-to-play category. The game will be released as a single-player party-based RPG, and not as a free-to-play online game. Another Steam-related update: the game’s name was changed to Tribal: Slavene Kingdoms because Tribal is too generic and we'll have to make multiple games to tell the story about this world and its characters.

We also want to make another little announcement: our Kickstarter page is now live!
Don’t forget to follow, so you won’t miss the start of our fundraising campaign, as well as the release of the free demo on Steam. See you soon!

The website now says:

Tribal is a tactical role-playing game with optional online elements

In the Tribal universe, when ordinary people talk about magic, more often than not they’re referring to the prayers of the Volhvy. Most Volhvy’s petitions to the Gods aren’t heard, so most become little more than preachers. However, those that have earned the God’s favor can be a force to be reckoned with. In the animation the Volhv prays to Perun and calls for lightning.
