Great interview!
i hope that he will soon put the website on net, with screens, more info of the world etc.
I'm looking forward, and hopefully it will be more RPG than action\combat.

Would be interesting to hear Micheal's thoughts on Incubation, one of the best squad-based and turn-based strategy games ever made(although some would probably call it a puzzle game).

Good interview, but all sorts of alarm bells went off in my head re. the feasibility of the project. Sounds like a guy with good experience (developing some of my favorite games) and a great design document, but not much more at this point.

Btw, you don't have to use Source to distribute via STEAM. Red Orchestra: Ostfront is proof enough.

I like STEAM, personally - I'd rather wait a few hours and save $5-10 and not have to worry about packaging crap.

Sounds interesting, although I actually like characters with (some) personality more than mindless, faceless combat drones. Let's just hope that he actually manage to finish the game and that it will turn out at least almost as good as it sounds.

Agreed, if a game were to give its pre-gens a peronality as well as a well made character build that fitted like in Freedom Force, I would be playing with pre-gens exclusively at least for my first play-through.

A quite brilliant interview, though I must admit that I am somewhat skeptical towards his intention of releasing the game in three parts.

Also,
The squad will not have their own personalities. When you tell him/her to fire on someone, you won't get some crappy "TURN AND BURN!" comment. I really can't stand those bogus Aliens copy-cat tough guy personas in games.... that just kills me.
Nooooooo

Excellent stuff!

As for Steam, in its early days it seemed to be an 'fps-only' deal. But I bought Space Empires IV over it recently and as they seem to be diversifying the type of game available on it, I'll keep using it.*

I'll def be buying this when it comes up on it.

[* Also I no longer have any of the weird problems with it that existed when I first installed it. Works wonderfully these days, as long as you have the right sort of internet connection  ]

To me, it sounds like he could be talking about roughly the same "personality" level we got in ToEE, IWD2, etc. That was great as far as I'm concerned. Without really intending to, I ended up having backstories and even defined interrelationships for my whole party in both of those games, and they were more interesting to me than a lot of the NPCs in other computer games.

The problem with NPCs is that they have to be done really well if they're going to be done at all. For a project of this sort, I'll be satisfied if the interface, voices, etc. don't actively get in the way of my own ideas about my party.

Section 2.A

License Terms.
Steam and your Subscription(s) require the installation of the Steam client and the automatic download of software, other content and updates thereto onto your computer (“Steam Software”). You may not use Steam Software for any purpose other than the permitted access to Steam and your Subscriptions. You understand that Steam may automatically update, pre-load, create new versions or otherwise enhance the Steam Software and accordingly, the system requirements to use the Steam Software may change over time.

ie We can download onto your PC whatever we want. When we want to. And you've just agreed to it.

Section 3.F

Third Party Sites.
Steam may provide links to other third party sites. Some of these sites may charge separate fees, which are not included in any Subscription or other fees that you may pay to Valve. Steam may also provide access to third-party vendors, who provide content, goods and/or services on Steam or the Internet. Any separate charges or obligations you incur in your dealings with these third parties are your responsibility.

ie We are going to spam you. And you've just agreed to it.

Section 8

VALVE DOES NOT GUARANTEE CONTINOUS, ERROR-FREE, VIRUS-FREE OR SECURE OPERATION AND ACCESS TO STEAM, THE STEAM SOFTWARE, YOUR ACCOUNT AND YOUR SUBSCRIPTIONS(S). YOU ASSUME THE ENTIRE RISK WITH RESPECT TO THE PERFORMANCE AND RESULTS OF THE STEAM SOFTWARE IN CONNECTION WITH YOUR HARDWARE.

ie We can download whatever we like. And if it fucks your computer, tough shit.

Section 10.

AMENDMENTS TO THIS AGREEMENT
Valve may amend this Agreement at any time in its sole discretion. As a Subscriber, you agree that Valve may amend the terms of this Agreement. If Valve amends the Agreement, such amendment shall be effective thirty (30) days after posting the new amended Agreement on Steam. You agree to review the Agreement periodically to become aware of such amendments. You can view the Agreement at any time at http://www.steampowered.com/. Your failure to cancel your Account thirty (30) days after an amended Agreement is posted on Steam will mean that you accept all such amendments. If you don’t agree to the amendments or to any of the terms in this Agreement, your only remedy is to cancel your Account or a particular Subscription.

ie You agree to a contract where the other party can do whatever the hell they like. If you don't like it, you can't play your game any more.

Section 11, subsections B and C.

…In the event that your Account or a particular Subscription is terminated or cancelled by Valve for a violation of this Agreement or improper or illegal activity, no refund, including any Subscription fees, will be granted.

C. Termination by Valve.
1. In the case of a recurring payment Subscription (e.g., a monthly subscription), in the event that Valve terminates or cancels your Account or a particular Subscription for convenience, Valve may, but is not obligated to, provide a prorated refund of any prepaid Subscription fees paid to Valve.

2. In the case of a one-time purchase of a product license (e.g., purchase of a single game) from Valve, Valve may choose to terminate or cancel your Subscription in its entirety or may terminate or cancel only a portion of the Subscription (e.g., access to the software via Steam) and Valve may, but is not obligated to, provide access (for a limited period of time) to the download of a stand-alone version of the software and content associated with such one-time purchase.

ie. You don't own your game. If we decide to stop you playing, we can. So tough shit.

Would love to see the whole thing taken up by the Consumers people here in the UK.

Read any EULA and you'll realise that every piece of commercial software you have reserves itself the right to sodomize you until you bleed. Being afraid of Steam--and online delivery in general--is counterproductive as it plays into the hands of the current industry model of big companies sticking little boxes into big stores. That industry isn't about to produce the games we really want to play. Seriously, let's take a look at the upcoming isometric TB RPGs and see how many of them are indie, digital delivery games versus how many will be in a Wal Mart near you soon. Digital delivery (or whatever you want to call it) is nothing but good because it allows little guys (like McCarthy, or Vogel, or even Vault Dweller) to make their games and sell them to people without going through the big industry machine.

There's some pretty heavyweight DRM. Valve reserve the right to kill all your steam games if you are suspected of piracy, they will also silently flag your account as banned if you are caught cheating by a watchdog process - there has been one recorded false positive.

In balance, I think the draconian approach to dealing with piracy and cheating can be forgiven if steam can realise its potential to reduce the negative influence of publishers on the industry.

Of course, if it takes off we are going to get stEAm.

Exactly.

What STEAM can do is act as spyware and its unlike most spyware that is installed without your knowledge, if you get rid of it you sudden lose the ability to patch games and even start the games.

Worst it can do EXACTLY what S.W.A.T. 4 patch did with targeted ads on play levels.
