People are more than willing to wait if the gameplay is fun and engaging.

You spend more time hunting for collectibles in modern open world games that sell millions than you do actually playing through the story content and combat, people do it because they feel immersed in the experience.

If you make the TB fun, the encounters, the animations, the abilities, people will play it.

Did you seriously just quote an interview from the Black Isle days to make your point?

I think it's just slightly possible he might have changed his mind given trends over the past couple of years.

I don't know why anyone thinks Feargus would be opposed to turn-based.

http://web.archive.org/web/200409100631 ... p9_01.html
GS: Are games that feature only turn-based combat "dead"? Do you think any RPG you produce will need some form of real-time combat, at least as an option (in spite of the fact that a lot of fans of the Fallout series loved the turn-based combat)?

FU: Dead? I think that has to do with the available time people have, more than any other reason. People need to get through combat quickly, and turn-based combat can drag things along. Turn-based combat is fine if there are three turns. I get frustrated in Wizardry 8, spending four turns just to get to the creatures I want to fight and then spending a long time in battle--sad to say, I just don't feel like I have time for all that, and I think a lot of gamers feel the same way.

aint nobody got time for TB

RTw/P where 90% of the game's total playtime is in trash combats though

Do we have an Obsidian turn based game that isn't a mobile card game (pretty speedy) or a Paper Mario-like (requires input from you on the enemy's turn to decrease damage)?

No, because until PoE and Tyranny Obsidian was working exclusively for publishers. And mostly will continue to do so.

PoE could not be TB for obvious reasons. Tyranny is using the PoE engine for obvious reasons. Will they produce a TB game using their own IP? I dunno. But the reasons at this point are related to financing and development resources, not Feargus. If you want to convince me he doesn't think he can sell a TB game in 2016, you'll have to come up with something he said recently. Or at the very least this decade.

As a life-long fan of turn-based...

XCom overall sales were, to quote the bard, "disappointing", and it stumble-walked to a sequel on the strength of PC alone. If it had been console only, it would have been given last rights long ago. DoS is turning in respectable sales...for last century. Unless you can churn those babies out on an annual basis, that level of sales gets you the box on your desk from the regular industry.

Maybe one day - maybe - a turn-based game will finally do 2 mil at $60 a piece, and then turn-based games can finally enter the 21st century. (Mm, maybe in the year 2020, or so.) Meanwhile, rtwp has moved on from last century selling its top-tier at 2mil full-priced games to this century doing 5mil full-priced with DLC. But even then, if you're just looking at potential sales, turn-based isn't even playing in the same league as rtwp. And looking at average earnings is just as bad. If you do turn-based, you do it because you love it, and you keep your costs low.

Do you think Hearthstone would have been more successful as a real time game?

Shows how much he knows, when divinity vastly outsold PoE, so did shadowrun for that matter, with both managing to kick-start turn based sequels... Even a tb battletech game.

Shadowrun Returns came out 2 1/2 years ago and was in a humble bundle. Do you even know how sale figures work? You're even MORE of an idiot than I though you were.

RTwP and Real time games aren't even remotely the same. Even casuals we're complaining about PoE's combat being overwhelming and confusing. I really doubt the game would have sold less copies if it were turned based, but it probably would have sold more if it was action based combat that casuals enjoy.

Still has more sales than PoE and still managed to enable HBS to release two successful sequels, and kickstart a TB Battletech game, more than Obsidian has done lately.

D:OS on the other hand, was not in a humble bundle, kickstarted for less money, didnt need to bind itself into a "spiritual sequel to X game" campaign, had better production values with a next gen rpg engine, sold more copies, managed to kickstart a sequel.

Obsidian has shit decision making from the top down, they have been on the brink of bankruptcy for years, they have been living from project to project, failing to pitch their own IP's and subsequently whoring themselves out for anyone who will pay.

Pïllows couldn't even sell 600k copies, but RTWP sells better honest!!!:lol:

D:OS bitchslapped Obsidian so hard two summers ago and it wouldn't surprise me if a bunch of part time modders from Beamdog do the same.

That's counting tablet sales as well. Doesn't really count for me.

It is not Beamdog fault these other engines don't work on tablets :)

No one important takes tablets into account.

I am pretty sure any company planning their budget for their next project takes all revenue into account.

Except the people who are counting that sweet tablet money.

I wish Torment outsells PoE, maybe that smacks some sense into Feargus about TB games selling as well as RtwP.

I am pretty sure any company planning their budget for their next project takes all revenue into account.

Then I'm sure they take into account that the majority of BGEE sales were made at $5 on sale, fuelled by nostalgia and popamole players who have heard that it's the "best RPG ever". I'd bet good money that PoE has been far more profitable for Obsidian than either of the BGEEs were for Beamdog, plus IWDEE's sales have been dismal. I think SoD's attach rate will be lower than anyone here is expecting because the vast majority of people who bought the game have amassed <1h playtime, it's just sat in their Steam library.

Pillars' production budget must've been way higher than *EE's though. I've no doubt they were profitable as fuck. It's often that way if somebody else had already done the hard part. If I had to guess, I'd expect the break-even point to be in the tens of thousands of copies, if for Pillars it's in the hundreds of thousands.

That said, this is all 20-20 hindsight. When Beamdog started on this, they had no way of knowing if it was going to sell 1000, 10,000, 100,000, or a million copies at any price. I suspect they were surprised at the success too.

Torment's going on consoles so Torment's going to win.

Didn't Wasteland 2 and Original Sin bomb on consoles?

FWIW, Vgchartz shows numbers for D:OS that aren't completely horrible. Though it depends what they were expecting. We'll know for sure what Larian thought when we see if D:OS 2 gets a console version or not. Wasteland 2 is probably a complete fail though.

But even without that, I think Torment is likely not to get a console version simply because of how text-heavy it is.
