So I just made it into the castle, and I got my equipment from the north west tower, but I noticed there is better equipment, including a musket, in the north east tower. How do you get into that tower? There is no door.

if i remember correctly you need to find a switch in the kitchen/pantry.

but its not really useful since there is not much ammo around for it.

I found it. This game is really weird. I found a space ship in a field! Can I fly it?

Nope. The space ship is actually a Wing Commander reference.

There is a magic carpet that you can fly though, and it is awesome. The only purpose of the space ship, beyond providing a wink-wink-nudge-nudge reference to another Origin game series, is to start off a small side-quest for the Hoe of Destruction, one of the better weapons in the game.

The musket is awesome because of the attack animation for it. The Avatar both fires it with one hand, like Schwarzenegger did in T2 with the shotgun.

There's another musket on a small island just north of Jhelom. To find it's exact location, you have to lean on this nice-looking bird that hangs around certain places in Britannia. After that it's just a matter of getting a ship and setting sail. Yew'll know the place when you see it, it's not so baa-d a place.

But the musket isn't the only gunpowder weapon in Britannia...

Are there any stats for items in this game? I'm trying to judge which items are better than others.

Also, the combat is extremely twitchy. Is it an important aspect of the game, or can I mostly ignore it?

To be honest, I never really cared about fights in this game. Press "C" and let the fight roll. There are some problems with running NPCs: they leave their equipment behind.

If you manage to get a way to "fly" around, DON'T fly over the southeastern island. You may trigger a door that will become LOCKED forever. Youy're free to fly anywhere else though.

Combat is retarded in Ultima 7, and I say that as a complete fanboy of the game - it's probably my favorite game of all time. But combat is just mindless and random. It's not a super important part of the game, fortunately. If you equip your party well enough, they'll run around like idiots once you enter combat mode, and after the chaos is over, the bad guys will be dead and you won't be, which is really the most you can ask for.

Item stats are pretty basic. If I remember correctly, armor has a defensive value, weapons have an offensive value - and that's about it. And honestly, I don't even think you can view them anywhere - but it's been awhile since my last playthrough, so I don't remember for sure. In general, magic armor is the best, followed by plate, chain, etc. Weapon-wise, any unique (named) magic item should always be equipped, followed by any standard magic item. If you have Forge of Virtue though, there's some fun stuff you can do once you have the Black Sword. It will also max the Avatar's stats, which should make combat even more trivial.

Here is a list of things that add defense:
Armor: There are 6 places of the body to protect, namely, head, neck, torso,
hands, legs, and feet. Armor only decreases the likelihood of your
getting hit, it does not reduce the damage if you do get hit.
Sorted from BEST to WORST
Name: Defense: | Name: Defense:
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ | ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Magic Armor 5 | Sword of Defense 3
Magic Helm 4 | Chain Armor 2
Magic Leggings 4 | Chain Coif 2
Magic Helm 4 | Chain Leggings 2
Magic Shield 4 | Gauntlets 2
Plate Armor 4 | Greaves 2
Great Helm 4 | Scale Armor 2
Antique Armor 3 | Spiked/Wooden Shield 2
Crested Helm 3 | Buckler 1
Curved Heater 3 | Kidney Belt 1
Decorative Shield 3 | Leather (anything) 1
Gorget 3 | Protection Ring 1
Plate Leggings 3 |
Magic Gauntlets 3 |

And here is a list of the unique/almost-unique magic weapons in the game:
---------
|Weapons|
---------
There are many more weapons in the game than are listed here. However, these
are the weapons that I feel standout for one reason or another or that warrant
some type of comment.

Two Handed Sword - This non-magical weapon does lots of damage. It's heavy and
requires two hands, but you'll want to give these to your main fighters as
quickly as you can find them. Later on they'll most likely be replaced with
high powered magic weapons, but they'll always be good weapons to use.

Great Dagger - This will be a good weapon to use early on. It's light and only
requires one hand, but it does lots of damage. You'll get better equipment
later on, but during the beginning of the game be on the lookout for these.

Sword of Defense - This weapon is great for weaker characters. It does the
damage of a sword but adds a +3 defensive bonus. It's like having a second
shield.

Magebane - This weapon does a decent amount of damage, but it's special ability
makes it a must-have. If you hit a magic using character with the Magebane he
will lose his mana. This game is full of enemy magic users, and they are
usually the toughest opponents. Even if more damaging weapons are available,
you should probably have at least one character equipped with a Magebane just
to deal with magic users.

Firesword - A mildly strong weapon, but again it's the special ability that
makes it stand out. When held in a character's hand, this weapon will act as a
full time light source. For convenience, you'll probably want to permanently
equip a character with this weapon. If you have better weapons though, you can
always put it in a character's secondary hand. It'll still act as an infinite
light source.

Hoe of Destruction - One of the best melee weapons in the game. To make matters
even better, you can get it fairly early in the game and without much danger.
You just have to find the key to the shed. If you have this weapon you should
probably always have someone equipped with it.

Lightning Whip - This is an average magic weapon. But it has a really long
range, which is a big plus. You'll be able to find lots of these if you take
the time to explore caves here and there.

Death Scythe - Besides the Blackrock Sword and Glass Swords, this is the best
melee weapon in the game. It's rather hard to find though without using 'cheat'
rooms. If you have the Forge of Virtue add-on, there's one available on the
Isle of Fire.

Blackrock Sword - The best weapon in the game. You'll have to keep this with
the Avatar, but there's no reason you'd ever want to equip anything else. It
also comes with a few special abilities. The demon inside the sword can
replenish your mana, cast delayed blast at will, and instantly kill most
characters in the game (including Lord British).

Firedoom Staff - This is a fairly powerful weapon, although you'll have to be
careful. The powerful explosions it sends out can easily hurt your own
characters. For this unfortunate reason it might be best to not use it at all.

Glass Sword - This weapon will kill almost any creature in the game in one hit,
the exceptions being a handful of highly powerful characters like Lord British
or Batlin. However, the sword will shatter on impact making this a one-time
use weapon. Save these for your toughest opponents and the occasional
emergency.

Juggernaut Hammer - Another one of the strongest weapons in the game. And to
make matters better, this one is a ranged weapon allowing for valuable
defensive spacing. You'll definitely want to use these when you find them.

Magic Axe - Not nearly as powerful at the Juggernaut Hammer, this is another
excellent ranged weapon with unlimited uses. Unlike the Juggernaut Hammer,
this weapon is one-handed and can thus be used with a shield or any other
useful secondary item. It is also a lot less rare.

Triple Crossbow - Another incredibly strong missile weapon, yet burdened by
its need of bolt ammunition. Be careful though - it's all too easy to shoot
your own men in the back.

Magic Bow - Not as powerful as the Triple Crossbow, yet formidable in its own
regard, the Magic Bow also requires ammunition in the form of arrows. However,
unlike the Triple Crossbow there is a large variety of a magical arrows in the
game including: Magic Arrows, Burst Arrows, Tseramed Arrows, and the extremely
rare Love Arrows.

Yup, that happened to me the first time I played it. When I called tech support, OSI told me to snail mail them my saved game and they could repair it, but I never bothered. Didn't actually get around to finishing it til a few years later.

happened the first time i played also. The only way I could finish was a year later when I discovered the game had a cheat mode, and I could circumvent the bug. after that, I replayed the game all over again.

Don't know if exult fixed this bug.

I aways played ultima 7 in pure DOS.

I'm thinking about replaying it, but i'm in doubt about playing it in exult or in dosbox.

I heard they didn't implement NPC schedules in exult, and some other features. But they added other features as well. Will I miss characters roaming around and doing their shores?

which should I play?

A good place to own a gun.
It's been so long since I played this game, it would be entirely new to me. But I must say, I have a hard time with games featuring throwaway combat. Even games as brilliant as PS:T usually get left unfinished if combat is empty.

Playing this right now. Yesterday I finished Cyclops Cavern.

Looks like you don't have problems with weapons and armor.Already have many pieces of magical armor, Hoe of Destruction and shitton of regeneration rings from tower with the ghost.
How to take ammunition what lies under giant snake/dinosaur bones?
