Underrail received its fourth major content update today, entitled Method and Madness. The update adds new psi abilities and new items to the game, but the main highlight seems to be the addition of an alternative entrance into the Institute of Tchort. It also includes a new dungeon. Here's the summary from the latest development update:

    Hi guys,

We're rolling out a new content update. The main features of this update are new psi abilities for the three psionic schools of the base game, new items, and an alternative entrance into the Institute of Tchort, which becomes available at the appropriate time.

We also added an interesting new dungeon that can be accessed from somewhere in the Upper Underrail, so you might want to revisit those areas again.

I won't spoil the psi abilities; you'll have to find them out yourself. We haven't added any new temporal manipulation psi abilities, but we're likely to do that in a later update. The problem with TM is that it's designed to be limited in its offensive capabilities, in a sense that it's meant to deal its damage through a single delayed effect. And on the other hand, it's already overloaded with utility. This makes it quite hard to come up with something that would fit well into the school without making it even more unreasonably useful. We have some ideas, but they will need more developing.

We are due for just one more content update before we shift fully to the Infusion project. From that point onwards there will be minor addition to the game, at least until the Infusion is released. But more on that in the next dev log.

Let us know how you like the additions and changes.

    Cheers.
As usual, you can check out the full update for a detailed changelog. One more of these to go. It'll be nice to hear about Infusion again.

Please just add some more story, and a bit of C&C.

It's a great game, but far too one-paced to make the list of "Classics" for me.

And that's really sad, coz a bit more genuine story, character interaction, C&C and depth in those areas is all it'd really take to lift it up to that level.

It has a lot of of story, and after the expansion it has even more story. But maybe I do not understand what you mean by "genuine".

Tbf, I've still not got round to playing the expansion. But I mean the pacing of the story.

I thought the game was great, but that there was just too much space between the NPC interactions you have between objectives. It felt like they were just there to dish objectives out as a functional thing, rather than being living, breathing characters. And it all started to feel very mechanical.

I've only played it through fully once, and half-through a second time so I'm no expert on it, but I just thought the pacing was out at times, and that some more character and story interaction would lift it to another level.

The characters are great, afaic. I have often expressed my admiration about how Underrail can make characters interesting with very little dialogue (note however that the expansion went a different way, and can be very wordy). Dan, Dude, Ezra, and even JKK's Vivian are some of my favorite characters. But even the merchants have their distinct style. The Core City Oligarchs were a bit disappointing, but nothing is perfect I guess.

I can see how there is a lot going on in the game, and it is hard to take it all in during a couple of playthroughs. I can also see how UR often does things differently than other RPGs, and not everyone is going to like that. For example, if one does not appreciate Mordre's characterization and arc, maybe the whole thing won't work for him in terms of storytelling.

But UR does have a very interesting story (with a lot of cliffhangers and not fully connected dots, mind you) and several cool characters. Yes, there is a lot of fighting in between, but for UR's fans that's how it should be. Personally, I find the setting very intriguing, like it is a character itself, so I never feel I am disconnected from the story and characters. Plus, the combat is awesome, so yeah.

It's optional to figure out the story and the backstory. If you're not careful, you won't know what the hell actually happened at the end of the game. Otherwise, you get a lot of backstory on the endgame area, the entire gameworld, and particular factions and individuals.

You're like people being butthurt at Stalker: SoC for the Wish Granter ending. And in another way, you're like people asking for romances and full voice acting.
