Project: Eternity
There is still experimentation and innovation going on in the gaming world, albeit outside of the mainstream. The people behind Overgrowth and Lugaru created this in 7 days (!):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCThInmzjXw

- all parts of weapon manipulable by player; remove/insert cartridges, pull safety
- no hud, have to remove cartridge and check how many bullets you have
- world is randomly generated by placing rooms and items in random order
- damage is localized
- bullets fly slower after ricochet
- no regen/save/respawn
- running demands tapping keyboard

While it's a very cool concept, it's kinda also like Minigame: The Game.

Renegade: "I want to shoot people."
Paragon: "I want to heal people by shooting them."
Troll: "I want to be a floating pistol"

Huh...

I guess I'll check this out sometime. I already signed up for overgrowth because it's so wonderfully weird and the combat is pretty good even in this early stage.

Instead of sissy robots, they badly need the xray camera for bullets through the tissue, Sniper Elite 2 style. It would actually make sense for this kind of project.
While I applaud the notion, I have a feeling they got this "let's make a gun game" thing backwards.

Looks pretty cool but it's one of those things that's probably more novel than fun. For instance, the obsession over gun realism is cool but does it add anything to the core shooting gameplay? I appreciate how they a) implemented all that stuff so quickly and b) got all of it to work so well, but I'm not sure if all the gun manipulation features really matter - you need to build mechanics that take advantage of those features and make them meaningful. Would like to see these ideas really fleshed out, though.

Whoa, they did that in 7 days? Kudoz then. Missed that bit.

Since they have pretences to making a "simulation", I think that at least some of the features will become useful once they add in some factors that call for them.
For example, just add misfires, and the pull back the slide thing suddenly becomes useful. There are some that will stay pointless, but hey, it's gunporn. You don't ask what's the points on the spikes on the dildo.
