Let's just hype it a bit more.

There's no handholding, for veteran SRPG:

- saving only on every 5 turns
- 1-2 unit skills that are varied for characters with same class
- In Prologue, 5 vs 10 with a bonus completion on an optional hidden condition
- In 1st chapter, mini-boss will waste weapon durability unless using unique weapons/load scumming

Many QOL UI options:
- Keyboard/Mouse/Gamepad support
- Battle animations
- Skip enemy turn
- Unit Speed/Message Speed
- Load command (for the masochistic)

Caveat:
- Cannot overlap multiple enemy units movement/attack range

Tip:
- Optimize each unit item loadout before chapter completion

Is there any info on what "next year" actually means? Early, late?

Just "(probably) next year."

Well, it's not an official announcement from the publisher but something like a status report from the creator. (And sounds like it has not been long since the work has started.) I guess you have to wait for an official announcement.

Western release is next year, published by Japan-based indie publisher Dangen Entertainment: https://gematsu.com/2018/08/strategy-rpg-vestaria-saga-for-pc-coming-west-in-2019

Vestaria Saga, the September 2016-released freeware PC game developed by Japanese studio Vestaria Project, is coming west via Steam in 2019, publisher Dangen Entertainment announced.

A free demo will be available via Steam on August 16.

Here is an overview of the game, via Dangen Entertainment:

About

Vestaria Saga tells the story of international conflict between a powerful empire, and a small coastal kingdom. When an imperial ship is set ablaze near the port of Meleda, it sparks a cascade of events that thrusts young warrior Zadrian into a war for the soul and future of his kingdom. On the run from a vicious imperial force and short on allies, Zade and his small band of knights must make difficult decisions to ensure that Meleda’s princess, and the very future of its lineage, remain intact.

However, not everything is as it seems, and forces in the dark corners of the continent conspire. The stage is set, and the pieces have begun to move.

Gameplay

Vestaria Saga is a classically styled Strategy RPG, where positioning, movement, and even weaponry, are paramount to success. Move your heavily armed units around a classic styled grid-based map and engage pirates, rebels, monsters, imperial soldiers, and anyone else that stands in your way.

Key Features
  • An enthralling campaign of espionage, international intrigue, and war written by veterans of the genre.
  • Classically Styled Strategy RPG gameplay on a grid-based map.
  • Two finely tuned difficulty modes to accommodate both strategy veterans and newcomers.
  • A full English script translated from the original Japanese by the best in the business.
  • Full support for both USB controllers and keyboard & mouse.

The steam page isn't live yet.

Curious that press release and the trailer never mention the name of Shouzou Kaga and Fire Emblem. What kind of marketing is that? (Come to think of it, it's pretty possible Kaga himself insisted them not to. Considering his seemingly reserved personality.)

Just a note, we're putting out a one stage demo on Steam in the next day or so. The trailer says "now" but the download link is not visible yet on the store page. Give it a day or so

Berwick Saga didn't list his name or Tirnanog in the credits either (presumably because of the Nintendo lawsuit). No idea if that's still an issue now.

Pretty standard Kaga opening so far. Handy to have an option to skip enemy turns.

Played the demo, pretty much old school Fire Emblem as expected. Will probably pick it up when it releases. Any news on a part 2?

Hey, I cleared a map of a post-GBA Fire Emblem(like) game, read all the cut scenes, and didn't feel withering hatred for all of the characters and the entire situation of the plot. Amazing.

Were they rushing the demo out?

+ They added units' HP gauge to the map, Jap latest version does not have that.
- The re-arranged stats are poorly thought-out, with a typo; Jap version layout is better.

Troy Stats in Jap layout:
Code:
STR 6 MAG 0
DEX 5 AGI 9
LUCK 3 PROF 6
DEF 6 RES 0
MOV 8

How is the story? Is it absolutely face-punchingly excruciatingly soul-crushing like Fire Emblem fans demand it be?

Of course. Kaga didn't suddenly forget how to write in retirement :P We're talking about the same guy responsible for the plots/gameplay of Genealogy and Thracia 776.

It's a work in progress. Some screenshots get posted now and again, no certainty on when it'll be done.

This interview confirms that Kaga doesn't want to be directly linked to this game. I'm guessing since he's retired and doesn't want people going crazy.
