I'm at the part where we go to emo hair inquisitor's research lab, and it has been boring so far. Is it too long till Space Rapists invade and does it get better when they do, or should I uninstall right away?

Chaos is close as when you do the ... thing on the Lab it opens a Chaos Gate. you still get Orcs for a while longer until you beat the Orc Boss but a few Chaos Marines and Bloodletters.

And I dont think it gets better, its the same shit ... the only reason to keep going is because you already done most of the game, its just not even fucking interesting ... besides as bad as Bloodletters can be lore rape the whole Captain Titus is resistant to the Immaterium strikes me as FAR bigger Lore Rape and even that is not solved, we just have Leandros to rat on him with the Inquisition taking him away.

This game just fucking fails, even DoW touched on the effects Chaos had on Loyal Space Marines without such a fucking coop out plot "dur, dur, I have +30 Chaos Resistance".

Indeed, sounds rather shitty. I will just switch to easy and see the rest of the story then :/ Also Ork voices are shit and those muslim things that blow themselves up on contact are annoying as hell, why every shitty shooter should have such enemies ffs.

=\

Play on Hard. The gameplay is good and challenging there. There's no point playing for the non-existent story. Either turn it up and enjoy the gameplay, or leave it.

God damn it I still can't decide if I wanna get this for $25. Does sound horrendously short, but the demo was fun. And I'm really not sure if I'd play the MP much, but the horde mode is right up my alley.

Hnnnnnnnngh and I suppose there isn't much else on my radar for buying this year. FNV DLC, Torchlight 2, Dungeon Defenders, Binding of Isaac (Maybe), Renegade Ops (Maybe), and then probably ask for Skyrim for Christmas. And it might take a decent chunk of time to hit $25 or lower in the future. But the longer I wait the fewer people will be playing MP, which increases the chances of me not playing it much.

DECISIONS

Think you have a video game substance abuse problem! Just wait, it's already mid September. Personally I plan on getting TL2 in October at full price (because I love Runic) and that will easily carry me into the Halloween, Thanksgiving, Treasure Hunt, and Holiday sale at Steam.
BUT I LOVE VIDEO GAME. And I'm definitely snagging TL2 at full price, and FNV DLC at full price since for some reason I fucking love FNV and want to see the end of the DLC, and Dungeon Defenders because it's supposedly gonna be $10 and the mix of tower defense and action RPG sounds fun. Plus I think Isaac is supposed to be $5 so I'll probably just buy that for what the hell, and Renegade Ops is something like $7 if I do a 4 pack I believe.

So I do have a problem, but they're mostly cheap games I'm picking up anyway. Then the winter sale will make me buy a ton of crap I won't play for months and months. I'm only just now playing Darksiders, after having it for probably half a year to a full year after buying it for $5 or something. :M

Probably will do as Mangoose suggests and wait until the horde mode is released and give it a second glance. And then unless that sounds super exciting, just hold off on it.

That's exactly why I force myself to wait for sales. When I think I have nothing new to play I just look at my list and find half a dozen games. Tried Atom Zombie Smasher the other day that I got for a pittance in the last Humble Bundle and it's better than a lot of $50 games. On the flip side I also tried Elven Legacy and found it to be crappy~

I assume all they're implying is that Titus is a psyker, so that if they do a sequel they can give him AWESUM warp-powers and shit. It does hint at the whole BROODING ANTI-HERO FORCED TO SAVE HUMANITY WITH THE VERY POWERS THAT DAMN HIM cliche, but Titus is too old for that. If they'd made him an emo 20-30yr old I would've royally lost my shit.

Making him a Psyker would make even LESS sense as they are even more vulnerable to the Ruinous Powers, what gives the Tau being pretty resistant to Chaos is exactly that ... they dont have Psykers.

Not to mention the HUGE lore rape that would go even beyond that "little" detail, Space Marines have Psykers that are the Librarians, if he had psychic capability he would be detected when he started training as they take that VERY seriously.

Besides the whole Anti-Hero would fly off WH4K as using Chaos is damning yourself not matter what, just ask the Alpha Legion.

I don't understand how they can go from the Chaos Rising story to Retribution and then to this. Writer change?

Titus isn't resistant to the warp per se, he's resistant to a particular warp-related ability used by the Chaos Lord (or some kinda Force Weapon, I dunno).

... Except he is.

Titus was exposed to the energies of the Immaterium when he recovered the power source, you cannot claim it to be Chaos as Drogan research pre-dates his death and corpse possession, Nemeroth come there to get it and not because of the Titans as he wanted to use it to Ascend as a Daemon Prince.

The game FLAT OUT SAYS IT he should be dead because he was exposed to the unshielded power source, the one who said it was Demon Drogan that had no reason to lie and later Nemeroth shows great interest on his resistance to Chaos that he thinks its a sign of corrupted.

The error you are making is you are assuming the Power Source was Chaos ... it was not, it was just something that drawn its power from the Immaterium, to claim as that being Chaos would be claiming the Navigators are using Chaos.

Also it seems there is a back story were Titus was the only member of the squad to survive a fight against a Chaos Sorcerer that he killed, were they are already suspicions of him being corrupted by Chaos before the game starts, also if you pay attention to the armor you notice he have a Purity Seal hanging in one of the pauldrons that its a curious touch.

Well, mad props to Relic if Titus is a CSM in SM2, and you play as Leandros. (More props if you're not even an Ultramarine!)

game (singleplayer) is fun because its 40k, on its own merits its pretty meh...

manages some things right ( actually somewhat challenging on hard, no health regen etc., basic combat vs hordes is fun), but utterly fails at others (crappy level design, not enough encounter variety, terrible boss fights), even compared to your usual next-gen shooters which already have low standards.

too bad, i quite like it and think with just a few improvement it could have been really great but as usual you have the 40k fanatics cum all over it as if the game was perfect and everyone who disagrees is a secret gears of war lover .... so relic likely wont improve next time and continue the trend of 40k games that are fun to play but at the end of the day nothing more than fanservice rather than great games in their own.

I agree that Space Marine is far from being perfect, and the WH40K setting certainly helps to sweeten the flaws, but games like Dawn of War are good in their own right — actually I got into WH40K thanks to this serie.

as a multiplayer game Dawn of War was good - as a singleplayer game not really. it had a really short and uninspired campaign for one faction.... starcraft 1 s campaign ate it for breakfast and spit it out afterwards in content, variety, story ... everything.

winter assaults campaign was fortunately better but also way too short

i personally really loved the metamap approach of Dark Crusade because while the skirmish maps were meh ... the 7 fortress maps were more interesting than any previous SP missions in DOW campaigns and the light RPG elements (getting gear for your commanders, collecting honour guard) + being able to play 7 different factions gave the game some longterm appeal. together with mods DC even today is my favourite 40k game apart from Final Liberation.

Dawn of War 2 singleplayer was pure disappointment. pretty much dungeon siege in space. i still played it twice (not 7 times though:p) ... because its 40k. once again SC2s singleplayer campaign rapes it in gameplay .. though of course you could have an equal battle between them in which game sucks more at storytelling / raping fluff ^^

the first addon was a continuation of pure disappointment - i only bought it after playing retribution but wish i didnt, waste of money.

retribution was a step in the right direction again. it suffers from being easy as fuck but at least its fun to play now that you can actually field (though arent required to) armies again.

multiplayer-wise i thought DOW2 was fun but not even remotely as good as COH ... so a step back. i admit not having played it since vanilla though.

...

so to sum it up i have always been more or less happy with relics multiplayer offering but as singleplayer games they leave a lot to be desired and are only playable for 40k fans.

That's about it.

If it wasn't for wh40k I'd call it shit.

Also WTF I see posts starting to discuss plot in the game? Space Marine has no plot. It's about pressing a button and seeing a horde of orcs die.

So at least it is better than Dragon Age 2. Because here if you press a button, something awesome really happens.

Shouldn't games set in famous settings be held up to higher standards than the generic masses, not the opposite?

Grey knights are warp resistant, leonatos travelled the eye, ethrael stern presumably never succumbed to chaos. It's no coincidence that he was taken into custody by an inquisitor and not a chapter librarian...it's called getting the foot in the door of a sequel.

There's two ways the game can go, deathwatch and grey knights.

Was thinking same thing but then maybe people are starving for WH40 video games so they are glad that at least something gets done with the setting.

Speaking only of singleplayer, sure the Dark Crusade campaign is the best of all the DoW1 games, and very good in its own right. The others are lacking but still ok — and thankfully shorter than the bloated SC campaign — but then again you can easily tell that they focused on another part when they made the game.

DoW2 has some good ideas and some not so good ones, like the boring boss battles and repetitive maps. But definitely not on the same level as Dungeon Siege which was a lot simpler. Chaos Rising on the other hand did pretty much everything right and gave a much better pacing and objectives to the levels and added the corruption level which made things more interesting. Retribution isn't as good as CR but had its share of new stuff. But that's only considering the singleplayer part …

Speaking of starving for Wh40k stuff, have you played the Wh40k mod for OFP?

To eliminate stuttering launch the game with -nomap parameter

It's there because you have more than 512 megs of RAM

You will also have stuttering if you'll try to have more than 2 kms of viewdistance.

Agreed here mostly. I'm not sure if the level design and encounter variety is worse than the "usual next-gen shooter" per-say, though I usually avoid those.

I think the 40k setting helps the game in itself, not just for currying favor with fanboys, but because it's an actual good developed setting in comparison with the totally uninteresting settings in the "usual next-gen shooters." And this affects not just the environment, but also what the enemies are like, what the weapons are like, etc. Even if a player doesn't know much about 40k, I'd bet that he'd be more interested in slaughtering Orks than shooting Muslims/tentacle aliens/Africans/Koreans.
