in that they really want to provide a zoomed out state, "that does not change to a battlemap" when you have an encounter but simply zooms in. Sounds ok, but as long as I don't see more of it, I'll prefer the FO or JA way...

I thought Brian meant that while exploring a town for example and getting into a fight then the characters wouldn't be pulled into a JRPG style separate screen to resolve combat. I got the impression that there was already a delineation between the overland map to give a sense of scale and the zoomed in map would be the location exploration and combat map just as in FO.

It's obvious for FO fans but he probably was explaining it more for those that only just got on board or were thinking about it and didn't know exactly what this kind of gameplay entails.
Yeah, I was going to put that in as another possibility, but I couldn't think of a way to express it succinctly so I didn't.

Yeah, I don't mind at all if the graphics go full 2D. As a matter of fact I would prefer it. Somehow all the games that look good to me are 2D. Not to mention it will be much more cost effective, and still you can do wonders with 2D...

I would prefer the game in 2d too. Is it known yet if it will be 2d or 3d?

No, it's not more cost effective to do 2D, at least if you want graphics similar to, say, Fallout or IE games.

OK, if you say so. But I still prefer it... :)

BF just clarified this in the AMA

I probably have not been clear on this but the main city exploration and battles will take take place on an isometric view. There will be limited zooming but unlikely for full rotation. And the world map which gives you the larger scope of the world may or may not be isometric. Straight down for that may suffice but I want to experiment to see if there is a nice look we can achieve with a more isometric angle on that perspective. I should re-iterate that these are the kinds of things that we will throw samples up to the forums for feedback. Once we agree on the look is when I turn the artists loose.

Like Fallout. They are of course considering some options.

I'm really glad that there will be no rotating. Isometric games with fixed angles are much less workload.
