The Wasteland 3 Fig campaign is in its final hours. inXile have raised over $3.1M, unlocking the Customizable Ranger Squad Insignia stretch goal, but it doesn't look like they're going to make the last one. There's no fancy livestreamed wrap party this time, just a brief message from Brian Fargo, plus a little something extra:

The final hours are ticking down on our campaign and we once again are honored by your support. I assure you that these crowdfunding campaigns are critical to our ability to make the kind of RPG that we like to play and create. This was true in 2012 with our Wasteland 2 campaign and it's true again with Wasteland 3.

The biggest difference between now and 2012 is that we have assembled far greater talent to make this next game. The depth of writing, visual effects, balancing and polish will be on a new level for inXile. I could not be more confident in the team. We will make you proud again.

And finally, I leave you with a message from a new character from Wasteland 3... until next time.

I'm not sure if inXile are going to release another update after the campaign is over, so it's time for some retrospect. With rare exceptions, this was an extraordinarily dull campaign. Despite their claim that they spend ever more time preparing for each one, it's clear that after four visits to the crowdfunding trough, inXile's hearts just aren't in this anymore. And that's okay, really. They're an established RPG studio now. They should be more interested in making games than in running what amounts to manipulative marketing campaigns for them. In which case, my advice to them would be to let the games speak for themselves. Change your routine, and for your next crowdfunded title, have something playable ready before you ask for money. In 2016, I really don't think that's too much to ask.

So they've raised 3.1 million, and that's including the 2 million of investor funding? So 1.1 million of actual pledges considering the 2.2 was invested by day 1.

Looks like the Kickstarter lustre has really worn off after they flogged Bard's Tale.

No, it's a lot worse than that, investment amount is $2.25M (which was the cap). The current amount raised from the 17696 backers is $870K. Or in other words, even less than the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter was asking as its original goal.

You could also look at it as only raising ~$1.6M "during" the campaign, since it's at ~$3.1M now and was already at ~$1.5M before the campaign even began.

Either way, very poor showing.

Well I'm happy that consumers can smell the bullshit that was a co-op Wasteland 2. As a gimmick it's absurd, D:OS's RTWP and a full turn based experience are very, very different.

17,706 backers. That's fewer than the first Divinity: Original Sin (but still more than Dead State :smug:)

Psychonauts 2 also had a bit more. Wasteland 3 can't even match Schafer's Scam in terms of enthusiasm. :M

Fargo just tweeted this less than 30 minutes ago after sending a tweet thanking folks for Wasteland 3 success.

News at eleven: they don't give a shit about your advice, more now than ever after the Zyklon Beekers debacle.

I couldn't give a flying fuck.
I mean, let's get serious. They better be brewing a HD remaking or some shit because I am more excited for that instead!
But even with that thing I am skeptical they can pull it off.

Means they plan to eventually go FPS with real time combat like Fallout 3 and 4. Probably Wasteland 4 will be this way.

Lol you guys are literal-minded. He's obviously challenging Bethesda. "We're coming for you" = "Prepare for competition".

I now understand what the word "shilling" means, thanks Infinitron.

Yes, that's a perfectly reasonable interpretation of a paragraph telling inXile that their crowdfunding campaign sucked, that they increasingly suck at making campaigns, that their campaigns are manipulative marketing schemes, and that they should provide a playable demo next time

Fallout 4’s graphics look cheap and plasticy, but that’s OK
http://venturebeat.com/2015/06/03/f...ks-while-looking-for-a-bathroom-and-thats-ok/

Every faction in Fallout 4 sucks...but that’s OK
http://kotaku.com/every-faction-in-fallout-4-sucks-1750925725

Etc., etc. same rhetoric.

Judging by their campaign they're making another Wasteland game only because Fargo says so, not because they want to. It's not OK, nothing good can come out of it when they don't even have a clear idea or their hearts in it.

Except in this case I'm talking about the quality of a crowdfunding campaign, not a game. Ie, how effective they are at taking your money without providing anything in return for years. If you're really offended by not getting a month of excitement from inXile, then okay. :M

Fargo still had to put a brave face on "the ride" though, it's a tough job as salesman-in-chief. Not quite the Torment campaign in any event.

I would have backed if they hadn't used Tim Schafer's Fig and I think a lot of others would have done the same.

I choose to hope the Fallout comment will ultimately result in them just taking a generous stab at IV's stat/perk advancement system since they somehow went the entire RPG funding campaign without broaching the subject at all. Even back in the KS heyday---you generally had to talk it up on that front at least somewhat given the very nature of rpgs...

No ending surge at all really, probably they'll slow trickle towards the last stretch goal after the fact.

I think every time a KS campaign had a playable demo, suddenly nobody was interested, with maybe a few exceptions that I can't even recall? KS sells dreams and quick decisions.

When there's a demo:

Day 1: they want to give the demo a try before backing, because that's the "responsible" thing to do. Suddenly there's a "responsibility" factor in the decision making.
Day 3: they still haven't played it. No time. Too much shit to do. Maybe on the weekend?
Day 18: they haven't played it, lost all enthusiasm, the backing isn't happening.

My point is, Infinitron, who made you the marketing specialist to give advice like that? This is above your pay grade.
