It's a step down from the original Gothics in every way.
It might have been a step down from Gothic 1 & 2, but it was a big step up from the Risen games.
They need to get back to the level of skill PB had when placing enemies and items on the worldmap. There wasn't much logic to the layout in a lot of cases in ELEX. Particularly in the early game it shouldn't be such a slog to get from one place to the other. Gothic 1 handled it perfect. No need to reinvent the wheel (or be lazy)

Nothing in Elex reaches the same heights as the first two chapters of Risen 1.
Risen 2 & 3 are not good, but even those games did certain things better than Elex.
