Self-Ejected
If you can't handle me at my worst, you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.
- Kyros the Overmom
So, there has been a lot of speculation about wether playing Üvül in Tyranny is going to be an enjoyable - and ingenious - experience. But isn't it more relevant to ask if the game at large can click with the Codex demographic* - male, angry, white of mind; and if they will find themselves *gasp* represented?
*Combatfags may stop reading now.
Judging from the update, in the heart of our nemesis/ breadgiver (isn't that some delicious confusion?!?) a dichotomy exists.
On the one hand, he seems impulsive, even careless:
- he employs an anarchic bunch like the Scarlet Chorus
- he at least tolerates their thirst for wanton violence
- considering his empire spans the known world, he doesn't rely on a huge bureaucratic apparatus
- his Edicts - for example threatening to kill everyone in a warzone if his troops don't hurry up - can make him seem irrational (or hormonally imbalanced)
- he burns history books like someone burning bridges
But there's also that 'caring' side to him:
- he waged bloody war to bring everyone together and make sure they all play nice
- he actively uses mediators to get people to make up
- he believes in strict hierarchies and authority (so much so that people don't say his name lightly)
And there's some other stuff as well:
- he makes no difference between the sexes
- everyone's equal before his law
IOW, Kyros is a cross between an unstable emo girl and an overworked mom, with some SJW fairy dust sprinkled on top.
But what about the protagonist? Surely we can look forward to that role, at least?
What we know:
You're somewhere in the middle of the hierarchy. You're no longer told everything you have to do, but you're also far from being your own boss. This is conjecture, but you probably didn't arrive at this position by acting on your own whims, and certainly not by defying Kyros. So when the game starts, any agency on your part is something new to you. Acting against Kyros' discernible will may have consequences for you, but that's half the fun.
That's right, it's a coming-of-age story and you're just a little brat.
Even if you throw off Kyros' yoke, he accomplished far more than you have, and probably with much more foresight and knowledge of human nature, too. If you play his lackey, you're just walking the path others carved for you.
So, what can a grown man look forward to with Tyranny? Your opinion matters!!
