What game turned you into a gamer?

One of the first games i remember was a game where you had to move in 2dimensional levels while being chased by things that could eat you.

You could make holes in the floor where the enemies would fall in and they would die if they were in the hole when it closed after a while.

Anyone got any idea what game this was.

It was on a 2 or 386 or maybe even 486

Alley Cat. When I was five, I was terrifed of that bloody dog that comes after you.

I thought I was the only one to have played that game when I was but a little human project.
I can't forget that main theme tune, even after all those years!

Battle City, I suppose. I had played a few other video games before that, notably Prince of Persia, but that was the first game which I played extensively.

Got fully converted into a PC gamer by Warlords II.

On the PC, it would have been Wing Commander, Syndicate, and Space Quest 4. Also, NES which I played to death. Mostly side scrollers like Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, SF 2010 Final Fight, etc

I started playing console games when I was three or four. I think we got an NES when I was two (before we even had a PC), but I did not play it much the first year. I played the hell out of SMB (even though I have never beaten it) and Duck Hunt. My childhood gaming time was largely spent on the console. I remember my first computer (a Tandy Sensation) had a demo of Sierra's Mixed-Up Mother Goose, but I could not reliably figure out how to get to it. I also remember playing some choose-your-own-adventure-style games on Prodigy. My first 'real' RPG was FF VII. I only started getting involved with CRPGs (and computer games in general) in my teens (the very early part of this decade) when I picked up the Ultima Collection.

Super Mario Brothers 1-3, Chip 'n Dale, Duck Tales. Didn't own them myself, I had a C64 and after it broke, a SNES.

It was Red Alert that made me want a PC, though I got Steel Panthers for it instead. And it was awesome.

I started on the C64, there were many games at the time, couldnt say exactly which I played most ( Commodore Soccer, Falcon Patrol, Commando come to mind). What got me addicted a bit later on were really ground breaking games like Pirates, Defender of the Crown, Elite and Red Storm Rising. I really miss those golden days with good games coming out all the time.

You mean this? It was only the nasty exploits that made me stop playing it ..

One has to remember that there was a shitload of complete and utter crap as well so it wasn't all roses. How some of the stuff ever got published was really astounding.

Oblivion or Fallout 3. Or maybe Assassin's Creed. Fuck, I don't know. Something with bloom. I just couldn't get into video games until they added that super-realistic effect that really immersed me in the experience.

Different, it had a top-down view. I think it was called "Manchester United" or somesuch.

Oh yeah, another game of the yesteryear I remember with a fondness - North & South. It was awsum.

The three original Sonics. I had the Megadrive then the Genesis (I think?) in pre-teen days, whereas my cousin would buy NES and the SNES, so got a little bit of Mario as well. Parents weren't so sure on this 'gaming' thing and wouldn't allow a lot of games or any fighting / violent games (which is a pretty good policy when you're 5, actually), so Sonic was pretty much all I played for ages.

Moved to NZ and got hooked on Romance of the Three Kingdoms 2 (Start turn, 2, 1, 21, 2, 3, 4...), SNES Mario Kart, FFVII.

BG2 and Age of Kings really took me off.

edit: Oh, there was scorched earth:

Super Mario Bros. 3.

I was scared about jumping over the FIRST PIRANHA PLANT ON THE FIRST STAGE.

killing the goomba also took a lot of effort and courage. Of course, after jumping over the piranha, i got gibbed by the koopa nearby. Fuck Resident evil, SMB 3 was a survival horror for my baby self.

Can you imagine the kids who'll grow up with games such as Halo 3 as their first one? Decline.
