Christ, time must flow differently for some people here. Or my time management skills and/or attention span have completely shit the bed. I might finish Dying Light this month, which I started last year, kek.

Divinity: Original Sin 2
In the order of playing them:

Pool of Radiance - My first Goldbox game, and it was a fun D&D battle simulator. Not a huge fan of the (limited) random battles, and the narrative elements are barely present, but incinerating 3 dozen enemies with a fireball never got old.

Return of the Obra Dinn - Best deduction-centered game I've played.

Legend of Grimrock 2 - Much better character development compared to Grimrock 1, but I preferred Grimrock 1's singular descent into an increasingly dangerous dungeon.

Cultures 1 - Fantastic village builder in the vein of Settlers 2 and Knights and Merchants, with the additional twist of every villager mattering.

Bloodborne - Best arsenal of weapons in any Fromsoft game. Unfortunately found the game to be too easy owing to the health rally mechanic and how healing is tied to a % of max hp.

Grimoire - Enjoyable power progression for one's party through constant class changes. Some areas such as the Samhain Horror section and Skulheim were the standouts and were more interesting than the others though.

Might & Magic 3 - Addictive blobber that satisfies exploration lust and captures the feel of one's party gradually becoming walking gods. The town theme is the most memorable bit of game music I've heard all year.

Ultima 4 - Of all the games I played all year, this was the toughest to get through. Would love to see more games, especially open ended sandbox games, attempt to implement what U4 did with requiring the player's actions to embody different virtues.

DMC 5 - Disliked V's gameplay and the general level design across the entire game. Cemented my opinion that like DMC4 before it, DMC 5 ought to have abandoned multiple characters and just focused on Dante and designing enemies that can challenge his enormous moveset.

Betrayal at Krondor - Wonderful sense of adventure, accompanied by a well told story. Controlling different parties during different chapters went a long way towards replicating a book's pacing and structure in a game.

Sekiro - Most satisfying boss battles in a Fromsoft game. Let down by the least compelling content in a Fromsoft game in-between the said boss fights. The new traversal options actually ended up robbing most levels of tension since one could almost always sprint and jump away when the going got tough.

Blackguards - Worth playing just for the stellar encounter design.

Total War 3 Kingdoms - The overhaul of diplomacy options in the campaign bodes well for future Total War entries. 3 Kingdoms itself could have done with better unit variety, and better balanced General classes so that some of them (Strategists) don't feel almost mandatory.

Mount & Blade: Warband - Probably the best sandbox game I've played. The character progression of going from being a nobody to becoming a mighty warrior with hundreds of knights under one's command is unparalleled. Still have numerous highly recommended mods I haven't even tried yet.

Enderal - Its Mass Effect-esque main quest has a surprising resolution, but its handcrafted open world is let down by a stunning lack of variety in loot, rendering most exploration pointless in terms of rewards.

Grim Dawn - Competently made loot grinder, but I suspect I've fallen out of love with the loot treadmill genre. The souls and souls inspired clones have usurped this style of games for me with their far more deadly moment to moment combat, bosses who are huge roadblocks to progression and far more deterministic loot and loot drops.

Queen's Wish - Bland setting, characters and lacking character development options make it Vogel's worst game to date.

AI: Somnium Files - Best narrative of all games I played in 2019.

Surge 2 - This along with its predecessor have the best level layouts in a souls-inspired game. The games are worth playing just for exploring their 3d space despite limitations in other areas.

Code Vein - Mediocre souls clone whose best feature is the huge variety of passive and active skills available. Didn't like how one cannot conventionally level up individual stats.

Link's Awakening - Second Zelda game I've played and I preferred the dungeons and pacing of this game to that of BotW's.

Way of the Samurai 1, 2 & 3 - Some of the most unique games I've ever played. They have the most C&C I've seen in a Japanese game, and the third game especially has a staggering number of ways it reacts to one's actions. As the threadbare budget increased with each successive game, they got better and more fleshed out. Each game had a satisfying melee combat system and the hunt for rare swords with exclusive movesets became a game within a game.

Disco Elysium - The reveal of the murderer frustrated me beyond belief. Until then it was my favorite game released in 2019. A few months removed from my first playthrough I look back at the game as a collection of incredible moments that deserved a far more satisfying resolution. Knowing how poorly the murder mystery resolves makes me far less eager to start another playthrough given the already limited replayability.

Greedfall - Laughable combat and pointlessly long treks through wilderness areas (one of the best exhibits for why one should give cheatengine's speedhack a try), but the quest writing stands tall and carries the experience enough for a playthrough. Almost every single quest -- main quests, side quests, companion quests and factions quests -- is interconnected story-wise. It's also refreshing to see the writing credits of a modern RPG and see just one writer responsible for the script and setting -- it could explain why the game's quests are as interconnected and coherent as they are.

Underrail + Expedition - Character building porn in game form. No game does combat related perks in a better manner than Underrail. The limited C&C and the sequel bait linear main quest frustrated me till I stopped expecting Fallout and treated the narrative as nothing more than providing context for the constant murder-hoboing encouraged. The expeditions campaign was tedious and disappointing though and it's best to treat it as nothing more than a bonus that accompanies the expanded character building options.

ATOM RPG - Playing ATOM after Underrail didn't do its combat and character development any favors. On the other hand, ATOM had Underrail beat in character writing (despite the non-stop barrage of pop culture references), C&C and scratching the itch for a Fallout clone. For all the chattiness of ATOM's NPCs, they also had a sense of place and belonging to the game world that one rarely sees.

Overall, my favorite games I finished in 2019 were all ones that had released in earlier years -- M&M3, Warband, Way of the Samurai 3, Underrail and Grimoire. Sekiro and Disco Elysium were probably my most liked 2019 releases, but even they fell short of my expectations. Hope 2020 is a more satisfying year for new releases.

I know it's kinda a bit late as 2019 ended, but I've finally went out with full straight in Yakuza 0 and achieved 100% completion.

It was my first Yakuza game and I'll be definitely picking further games.

Seems like 2019 was a bad year for games that fit my taste. Of these 5 only 4 of these games were good and only one of them was exceptional

10/10

Deus Ex

9/10

Unreal
Hollow Knight
Super Mario Bros 3
Quake + Arcane Dimensions (would be 8/10 but AD gave it a promotion)

8/10

Dying Light
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Lara Croft: Temple of Osiris
Streets of Rage
Spyro 1 remake

7/10

The Outer Worlds
Doom 4
Fallout 4
Prey
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
Resident Evil 2 remake

I don't remember what else I completed in the first half of the year.

I've noticed lately I'm gravitating towards playing FPS and ARPGs (FPRPG, Metroidvania). I've always loved those genres but I am disappointed with the lack of diversity in my gaming tastes lately. Get back the love for Strategy, Racing, platforming, TBRPG, hack and slash, stealth, action-adventure, survival horror and more....doesn't help that some of these genres are not doing well these days, or have something about them in their modern state that pisses me off.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 A Beautifully Desolate Campaign
Despite a very stressful year I managed to chunk out a decent amount of completed games. In order of completion:
Puzzle Agent 1
Expeditions: Viking
Anna's Quest
Hector Episode 1-3
Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People ep. 1-5
Shank
Drakensang: River of Time
Deep Dungeons of Doom
Baldur's Gate series
The Journey Down: Chapter 3
The Last Door Season 1+2
Edge
SOMA
Dead Synchronicity Point
Scratches
Unepic
NightSky
Icewind Dale 1 (with both expansions)
Jamestown
Shatter
Icewind Dale 2
Wasteland 2: DC
Diablo 2 + LoD (replay)
Puzzle Agent 2

Surprisingly no FPS this year. I did try F.E.A.R. 3 but steam tells me I only managed 25 minutes.

Easily. I'm not much a fan of REmake 2 at all. It was passable at best. The original game is better, and I don't even like the original that much (1 >= 3 > 2).
While it had somewhat better gameplay than the original, it lost nearly EVERYTHING that makes the original games noteworthy and memorable to me, and had some stupid shit here and there in its place. Normally I'm a gameplay > all guy, but I have to make an exception.

The UI, the music, the sound effects, art style, the storytelling, the differences between scenarios, the atmosphere, some naunced details here and there. These were what I enjoyed about the original alongside the OK-ish gameplay. Gone in exchange for decent-ish gameplay and a weird butchering of what the original actually had going for it.

Nah man.
The level design is top notch (sometimes even better than the original), the enemy AI is pretty good, the atmosphere good as well and despite the new camera system the game still retains the same core ideas as the original games.
The only major problem is that the B run feels a bit underdeveloped. But overall it's a great game.

Now Fallout 4 is shit in the following departements: RPG systems; AI; general gameplay mechanics; quests; level design; world building; presentation; optimization; story.
7 is way too fucking much. A 3, or 4 if you want to be generous, is more like it.
A 7 this year is what Sekiro looks like.

Prepare your anus: I think I enjoyed Fallout 4 MORE than REmake 2. They're both decline in my eyes but I'm a sucker for FPSRPG with "Immersive Sim" influence.

Whetever game you enjoyed more is irrelevant.
I mean fuck, I enjoy the Naruto figthing games, and I'll be the first to admit that as figthers they are objectively mediocre at best and I would never advocate a single one of them as good examples of the qualities that define figthing games.

What matters is that you are objectively claiming that Fallout 4 to be on the same level of quality of REmake 2, despite knowing full well that not one of F4 design elements is in any way shape or form good or even functional. While RE2, despite your dissatisfaction, is a well crafted game that delivers on the inteded experience.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD
Quake
Momodora Reverie Under the Moonlight

The Witcher 3, including the expansions.

Mostly I've been playing Grand Strategy games or chess this year. There are so few games coming down the pipeline that interest me that I'm mostly just replaying stuff that I have, if I play at all.

Oh, and I may have played the Bard's Tale remasters in 2019 (only played 1 all the way through though), however that may have been late 2018. Bard's Tale 1 Remastered is must-play for cRPG gamers as far as I'm concerned. Absolutely the best remastered RPG I have played. The sequels can be skipped but you owe it to yourself if you're a boomer who never got into blobbers because of the archaic UI and hardcore design to play Krome Studios' superb remastering of this series. Those boys know what they're doing.

Finished Dying Light the very next day after 2019 ended, so I'm counting it as my finished game for that year.

Having not finished any other games I bought, I came to realize and accept some things about myself last year.

-Hardly played any of the retro style games I bought or roms of old games I dl'd. Too mechanically simple to hold my interest and it all feels too familiar. Sometimes you can't go back. Everything has a season. I do like to watch other people play them once in a while, if the art and animation are nice. And I just bought Blaster Master Zero 2 a couple weeks ago, dammit.

-Also no longer much a fan of action games. Running around hitting dudes on the head or shooting monsters in the dick bores me now. I used to love FPS/Character action/Action-Adventure, but these days I'd rather play a roguelike, survival (not survival horror, which are really just action adventure games) strategy/tactical, sandbox, or management sim. I'm tired of real-time fighting being the main focus of video games. There are exceptions, like Dying Light because the parkour/platforming is great in its own right, and I love the environment; Terraria, which one could write a book on everything besides combat that makes the game so good; and a new God Hand or Severance if they ever make them*

-RPG was my fave genre for years, but I've cooled on them too. But unlike action games, good ones can still keep me playing for at least a couple dozen hours. Put a lot of time in New Vegas, but the enormity and relatively slow pace of the game wore me out before I could finish. Another standout was Underrail, but other things got in the way.

-Open Worlds. There is much to like in this 'genre', but it's too much game for me. Including Dying Light, I've finished maybe 4 of them in my lifetime. I either avoid or make peace with the likelihood that I will not finish what I paid for. Oh well.

-Accepted that novelty is crucial to me. This is somewhat related to all the above. A lot of people can play every new game in a genre they like, or every sequel to a game the loved, but I cant. I crave new/different, whether that's via innovation or something that already exists but I never tried. But people who still get excited over another Gears of War or anticipate the next Halo baffle me.

-In light of all the above, I have no idea where 2020 will take me. Nothing stands out to me going forward. I have no interest in going back to uncompleted games I have. I'm sure something will catch my eye, but it will likely b something out of left field. I will be saving a ton of time and money though, so that's an upside.

So I like to make lists! And keep track of shit. So what! Those aren't ALL the games I played in 2019, but they are all that I finished (or deemed 'finished,' in the case of shit like Skylines).
