Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
i have noticed the caves, even those that are far from civilization aren't completely pitch black. is it bright because of gameplay reason, or there is a canonical light source (albeit pretty dim) that permeates the whole of underrail? like in avernum series, it is explained the the arc wizards magically modify mushrooms so they glow and spread them to the whole cave system so light exist.

the expedition DLC kinda made me realize. it's a cave, filled with mostly water and aside from the settlements, the water should be completely pitch black, but it isnt since people sail around with boats or jet skis.

Unless a game is gonna factor in light as a major gameplay mechanic then there's no point.

With that said, it would be neat to have in Underrail or any other "cave" game, but I don't know how you could overcome it not becoming an all or nothing thing where you're fine until you run out of light sources and then are fucked forcing you to always make sure to come with enough of them or not bother even trying.

Nah, there are dark rail tunnels in western Lower Underrail and nearby offices. Yiu really see shit there and have to use goggles. Also, clawlers like to roam there.

IMO, its electricity from renewable sources (geothermal, tidal powerplants) in metro, and bioluminеscent sea weeds and mushrooms in caves.

Geothermal is explicitly mentioned in some e-mails in DC, and you also encounter several species of bioluminiscent fungi (especially in DC). Bioluminiscent flora is also mentioned in some docs in Expedition, IIRC.

There is always some light because when the tunnel entrances collapsed some of the light couldn't get away and is trapped forever in the tunnels. Some areas have more light than others because the tunnels are shinier.

Maybe everyone has low-key darkvision. Everyone's been down there for at least 100, 200 years? And they're all futurey and not scared of doing mass experiments or science!. Some old megacorp probably just made some genemods for all their employees and families and it spread naturally. And if it didn't, well, you or your lineage will be dead, or stuck to the cities, eventually. Our own character comes from who-knows-where-the-fuck....

Love how some of Vogel's games handled this.
