Only a little grindy, it's like most of the oldschool rpgs. Start out weak and avoid dying to the first few things, get tougher, move father out, get tougher still, buy new gear, etc.
A little grindy is fine.
First game is grindy, more than the rest of the series. It's heavily based on Wizardry game, so you can't avoid some grinding. But the real reason is that the game is quite short, so the author wanted people to keep playing his game a little longer and thus made the game more grind than expected. Max level is 30, the first half is fast to level up, the rest is slower, though. You can easily finish the first game at level 20, though.
