Why don't we get more games that look this good?

Why does everyone keep saying that 2D is outdated?

Is that a fucking katana looking like it would weight 15 kilos over there?

Nice art tho.

Looks to me like somebody forgot to use "Force 16:9 Aspect Ratio" option. :)
But yeah, Muramasa looks hawsome. Too bad that the previous game of this guys - Odin Sphere - is much better IMO.

Good graphics(the background, I don't like anime style if it's not hentai), but seriously, when even mainstream game journalists complain about lack of depth, you know something is wrong.

And that katana looks weird btw.

My display is 1280x1024. 16:9 windows look a bit awkward, and toggling fullscreen mode results in black stripes or stretching. I don't like either. Maybe I'll grab a DVI/HDMI adapter and try outputting the image on my TV in glorious 1920x1080.

Nope. Machinarium and Muramasa are exceptions. There really should be more 2D games. It's not like they don't gain anything from more powerful hardware: it does allow developers to add extra layers, increase the number of sprites on screen and their resolution. Why doesn't anyone bother to take advantage of it?

Anyway, more Muramasa sexiness:

It does indeed look like crap. To boot, it looks like unoriginal crap. It's like the artist took snaps of SNES classics like Tales of Phantasia and Seiken Densetsu 3 to name a few, applied a lazy Photoshop filter or two and said 'HEY LOL CHECK THIS SHIT OUT!' And the characters look like they were meant for a crappy flash game as they don't integrate with the surroundings at all.

the characters design in Muramasa is clearly :decline: at least in their old games the characters look more proper(for anime), Muramasa crossed the line and look retarded.

@KalosKagathos

In your last two screenshots screen settings are correct (aspect ratio). The easiest way to check this out is to observe if circles/squares/rhombs look correctly.

Compare three screenshots in 1680x1050:

Stretched:

4:3 forced:

16:9 forced (correct one):

Of course whatever suits you best is fine :)

@Darth Roxor

Well, it looks exceptionally good in motion IMO: vidyia

I believe creating a large volume of art assets and animating (especially) in 3d is easier and faster than in 2d. Also takes up less storage.

It's the animation Shannow - every frame of every animation is a seperate image file. Multiply this by every single different set of equiptment on your character. Games like fallout avoided having to produce larger volumes of art by having only a few different visuals for different weapons, a hunting rifle looks the same as a shotgun looks the same as an assault rifle.
