Carona Forest is the tutorial combat area

You might be surprised but this is actually a pretty enjoyable action-RPG
Better than the Witcher 2 that's for sure

Later we'll be able to sell the monsters we'll kill

The coins are used arcade machine-style: they are your "lives" and let you continue onwards after a defeat

    Mint can jump

    And attack in melee

You can regenerate Mana Points by melee-attacking
HP don't regenerate though. No, not at all. Hardcore!

Pollywogs are here for our training

They are the easiest enemy in this game

But first and foremost Mint is a magic user
(Had we chosen to play as Rue, we'd have gotten a different storyline and a different set of abilities -- like shapeshifting)

The magic system is pretty varied
Magic itself comes in different "colours"

Every kind of magic can be used in different "effects"

We only have four kinds of magic attacks in the beginning, but there's a lot of them to pick up along the way

White magic comes in Spread and Vulcan (rapid fire) effects at the moment

Cutter and Droplets are the only Blue magic effects available to Mint now

Different enemies are vulnerable to different kinds of magic
And the usefulness of different effects depends on the enemies' number, speed, attack patterns, and positions

Blue-Droplets, also known as Raindrops, are cool when you have several slow enemies in front of you

Blue-Cutter aka Triple blades is pretty powerful but costs a lot of MP and is therefore only worth it against stronger enemies

White-Vulcan = Rapid fire is the most basic magic attack. Not powerful but, well, rapid.

A treasure chest with 3 Bronze Coins

"The silver coin and gold coin allow you to continue your game as well".

The difference between brozen, silver and gold coins is the amount of HP and MP they restore when resurrecting you

Saber Tigers are much stronger than Pollywogs; they rush at you and knock you off your feet

    Bastards

The Mandola is a nasty plant with long range attacks

They are best slain with Rapid fire

And so the tutorial area is done with

Mint trips over as she enters the next screen
And that laughter sure sounds familiar

    Huh, what's happening there?

    NSFW! :o

[IMG] Come on, baby. We ain't gonna hurt you.

[IMG] Yeah, got no money for dinner, either. Eh-heh, Eh-heh.

So what will our pretty princess do?

    :yeah:

    WHEN

    SUDDENLY

    THINGS GO A-FLYING

    :yeah:

    :o

    Fuck yeah!

    Take that!

[IMG] The hell do you think you're --

    :o

    :yeah:

    GIRRL POWAH

[IMG] You're the thug that knocked me down at the docks!

    So angry!

    :o

[IMG] Smokey, take the girl hostage!

[IMG] Just shut up and get the girl!

We see the pink-haired girl running away

    :yeah:

    So dumb indeed

    [IMG] Eh-heh, Eh-heh!

    And so the battle begins

The enemies follow you even when you jump on things

Triple blades help us a lot in this fight

    We beat 'em good!

    And run away he does

    :smug:

    :yeah:

Mint is oh so smug right now

    The girl approaches her

    And bows

    She's so bashful

[IMG] I wanted to beat those guys up anyway.

[IMG] Gee, if you didn't come, I don't know what would've happened to me.

[IMG] Oh, by the way, what's you name?

[IMG] I'm Mint. I'm a princess, but you don't have to be formal with me.

[IMG] You know what, you can just call me Princess Mint.

    :decline:

[IMG] Hold on, are you Elena?

[IMG] I heard from someone in town. She said you came out here to look for your parents.

    [IMG] Ohh. No wonder.

[IMG] Yes. You're right. I came here to look for my parents. They haven't been back for 5 days.

[IMG] I'm so worried about them...

    :o

[IMG] I have to go find them fast, Mint. It was nice meeting you.

We can't let the girl get away

    [IMG] Yes?

[IMG] Your father's name is Klaus, right? He owns an antique shop in Carona and is out here with your mother, Mira.

    Tah-dah!

    [IMG] That was amazing!

[IMG] Come on, let's get going. I'll help you look for your parents.

[IMG] You wanna find them, don't you? So I'll help.

[IMG] Thank you so much! I really appreciate this. Ok, let's go.

    Elena runs away

    :yeah:

One step closer to world domination, yay!

    heh that's one wacky game.

If you're using epsxe you may want to try the 1:1 pixel option in the video settings, it tries to keep 3D models to their correct aspect ratio and it works most of the time in such games. The prerendered backgrounds wont be affected but at least the character models wont look so wide.

I was expecting terrible Final Fantasy style combat, but it looks more like Zelda or something, which makes me like this game a bit more. 3 weeabees out of 10 so far

Despite this being a true rape face, I don't think that's reason enough for this lp to be NSFW.

Thanks, I'll try that. Not in the next couple of updates though, I'm afraid.

Never really liked the Zelda games. This is much more fun. As far as JRPGs go, this is probably the only one than is 10 weeabees out of 10. Once I'm done LPing it, my mission here on the Codex will be accomplished.
    :rpgcodex:

*Sigh* Only Kuroneko-sensei would be the one to understand me. :/

It may be not NSFW (although I'm sure your employer would think otherwise), but it is definitely NSFS, not safe for sanity, yay!

Interesting. :) I've been meaning to play this. Is the gameplay more interesting than button mashing and potion spamming? I.e. requires skill and timing, learning attack patterns, etc?

Sorry, spekkio-kun, I like this wrong aspect ratio for some reason, it looks good on my monitor. So screw you. :P

    Ditto.

You should play it ASAP. That's the only way to atone for the sin of not having played it. It's the only good JRPG, after all. :smug:

There are no potions apart from those your enemies drop, so no potion-spamming. There is a healing spell we'll learn later on, but you can't buy any HP-restoring items or anything. Get hit too much -- waste a life. But the gameplay difficulty is pretty easy, really; bosses do require timing and learning the patterns though; some precision jumping is required as well.

You know what makes me butthurt most? The fact that you've abandoned LPing. I feel so lonely out here.

And so our evil little princess has decided to help Elena find her parents

In the hope Elena's father, Klaus, leads her to the relic Mint so much desires

This area is a non-combat one at the moment, but it will become populated with enemies later

    Water, columns and shit

    Elena's patiently waiting for us

    And we follow

Looks like the girl has found her parents on her own

    They sure sound surprised

    Klaus is one innocent-looking bastard

[IMG] You haven't come home for 5 days! I was so worried about you!

    ...

[IMG] !? Dad, what happened to your leg!?

    Elena looks relieved

[IMG] I'm sorry, darling. I guess I became too caught up in my research again.

[IMG] Actually, I almost got mugged by these brutes, but Mint helped me.

    Mint appears!

    Cutesy as ever

    [IMG] That's Mint.

[IMG] She helped me look for you two.

[IMG] Oh really...? Thank you for all your help, Mint.

[IMG] Oh, and that's my wife, Mira.

[IMG] It sounds like you helped Elena through a lot of trouble. Thank you for helping her.

    SHOCK!

    Really, how!?

[IMG] So I thought maybe you had the same question.

    A rival! :P

    Huh?

    [IMG] His name is Rue.

Rue is this game's second hero
I could've chosen to play his route, not Mint's, but he's too boring

Rue's introduced as a typical silent JRPG protagonist, nodding his head in response
    (He'll become more talkative later)

"He looks like a weirdo". A jab at a JRPG cliché?

[IMG] He got here just before you did.

    :o

Mint takes a closer look at Rue

But the boy is as unruffled as ever

[IMG] I've been looking for the relic for some time now.

[IMG] I've visited many ruins, read through ancient manuscripts...

[IMG] Yes, yes. It's like a hobby.

[IMG] Recently, I found a vital hint that may lead me to the relic.

    [IMG] Atelier...?

    [IMG] That's right.

[IMG] We believe that this magician did some research on the relic.

[IMG] If we go to his atelier, maybe we can get more information about the relic.

    [IMG] Well...

    :/

Mira leads Mint to the edge of the cliff

    I wonder what's there below?

[IMG] If the legend is true, there should be some kind of special area down there.

    Below, you say?

    Too steep?

No way to climb down there?

    ;)
