go play EVNova, f00 ;)

Seriously, it *is* pretty much the same style of game. Granted, if the game is good, kickin' graphics only help, but at least play EVN until it arrives

Sweet, thanks for the post, XJEDX. I like EV, and I've been playing it since it got released but I miss the 3d look and feel of the Elite games. It's not about graphics, it's about immersion.

Been playing it alot, actually. I like most of it, save for the combat. The combat is just too damn hard. I don't like not being able to out-manuever enemy fire the way I did in Freelancer. I keep starting new pilots in EVN, playing up until the point where the Vell-Os on Earth tries to get me to work for him, I refuse, and then for some reason the Feds turn on me (which it would seem that they come after me if I accepted the Vell-Os mission from that seemingly shady character, but what do I know?), and then I have to run for the border, the Auroran border. There I make a ton of money running lux goods from Rimenta to Aurora, buy a nice big Enterprise, trick it out, then try to follow the plot missions, only to be detroyed everytime I gotta go up against a capital ship. Then I get frustrated and start over.

If they can take X-Tension and improve it (particularly the sucky combat), it'll be pretty good. It was too easy to capture ships and make a fortune in XT and there was little threat from the NPC pirates.

Jed, the Velos mission will NEVER be offered to you if you don't accept any missions called specifically "Delivery to Earth".

Simple

There's a rolling demo out for X2 as well - its non-playable but it has a benchmarking feature so you get to see how well the game runs. <searching> There are mirrors posted at EgoSoft's homepage, click on the X2 demo link.

D'oh! That always seemed like such an easy 18000 credits, especially since Sol is usually my homebase. Now I know. Now it's simple.

Thanks Astro!

No, the real PITA is the "Fight To Be Thurokiir" mission. It's damn frustrating having to fight off six Abominations in a Manticore sans escorts. I disabled all but one of them and then accidentally destroyed him. Arrrgh.

Why sans escorts? Because there's no "disable" button. These guys are idiots.

Behind you.
Get a carrier, Jed. Save up for a nice, fat pirate carrier. Let fighters do your talking for you.

Either that or go Polaris. Once you tell the Freds to piss off about being Vell-Os, run screaming to Auroran space and hook up with My'Randa or whatever her name is. Do everything she says and she'll lead you to the Polaris string. Polaris ships are the bomb.

As for X2, I want it. I do hope they offer Freelancer like controls in addition to a joystick control system, though. I don't feel like buying a USB flightstick.

That's what I was hoping to do, but I couldn't find a place to buy any decent capital ships in Auroran space.

That's what I wanted to do (once I figured out what was going on), but one of Mu'Randa's missions is to take her to Port Kane, which is where I got stuck both times. There are (apparently) three fed carriers just hanging out there who fire on me as soon as I drop out of hyperspace, which seemed a little like bullshit to me, but what do I know? Thus I never made it to Polaris either time.

I agree. I'm borrowing Freespace 2 from a friend, but I've put off installing it 'cuz I've been resistant to buying a joystick... Plus I thought Freelancer's controls worked really well; I had a blast during the combat, save for the fact there's so goddamned much of it.

Considering the game is a combat simulator, I don't see why you're surprised.

And don't listen to Saint. He means well but, goshdarnit, he's just misguided. Were I you, I'd start over completely. Then, you go to Auroran space--avoiding Fed hate inducing nastiness--and there's a 50% chance Mu'Randa will pick you up, without teh Feds wanting to tear off your balls.

Uh, because I thought it was a trading/exploration sim?

That sounds good to me. Maybe I'll try that next time I fire it up.

Thanks, fellers!
