X4 sounds bad but even X3 and all its expansions doesn't do it for me either. The UI is horrendous, and the gameplay is really lacking. Travelling around is slow and boring, combat is too shallow and repetitive, pew pew pew. You can't really build an empire in a fun way either. I would rather just play Space Rangers, what it lacks in 3d-ness it more than makes up for in gameplay. I want a space game that has tactical real time combat, like Starpoint Warlords. But that game only scratched the surface of what needs doing.

This is depressing. I thought Germans were smart? (I know they arn't smart enough to run their country) but they put cars together well - not as good as Aericans - but good enough. X3, X4, it's basically the same game - at least if the foundations of the game were working, maybe the modders could put something together in 5 years.
I gave into the urge and I'm playing it again. X3:AP with the Salvage Command Suite Mod and Star Wars mod, as well as some other quality of life stuff is where I thought the Mechwarrior Mercenaries franchise would go. And as for some of those Star Wars ships...better than porn...
That guy Stafan Molyneaux had on recently was right, we're getting dumber.

I think space games are still too niche. Games only get a lot of development if they can make a lot of money, and they only make a lot of money if they are hugely popular, and they are only hugely popular if they are GTA, Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty, Asssassisns Creed, Dork Souls, etc. The average gamer is a dipshit that wants to blow shit up, maybe hacky slashy some zombies or whatever. The space genre will need to grow, again. It needs to split up into dumb pew pew shooter space games, and deep tactical empire building strategy space games. I don't think the two can work together in one game. In the FPS genre you have games like Arma where people use a hundred different weapons and vehicles and fight together to capture key locations, and on the other end of the scale you have stuff like Doom and Callodoody which just has people running around shooting stuff in the face. Every genre needs a dumbass mcdonalds version of a game, and a high brow monocle version. The space genre isn't developed enough to have that yet.

The game in its vanilla state is broken. The Germans made design choices that make me wanna kick them in the nuts. Simple things like ship speed, pressing more than 3 buttons at once (dodging enemy fire) doesn't work, neutral factions destroying your ships when out of sector but standing down when you're in it... but once you start modding it, the game is very playable for when you're in between games. I'm currently running:
Star Wars Mod
Salvage Command Suite
Apricot Salvage Software
Marine Training Mod
And some quality of life stuff. Like Reduce enemy missiles - because what fucking cunt thought the game was balanced without that mod?. The Star Wars Mod makes it come alive for me - something awesome about getting the Millenium Falcon and taking it into battle with you. Also, the first three mods synergise very well - the SCS for instance lets you check the galaxy for all content (ships and all resources), and I get a hard-on from recontructing ship debris into random Star Wars ships, also things like the Aran get re-written by the Star Wars mod as well...

Yeah mods are essential. I still wish there was more to the original game so mods didn't have to do so much. German game devs seem like they would be awesome if they were on someone elses's team.
