so is the air combat mini game actually worth playing or is it just easier to auto resolve all the time

Btw that fucked up mission had an even greater fuckup situation around.
The reason, I am having money troubles is that I expanded pretty quickly as I think every downed and nuked ufo gets me funding. So I have 3 bases and because I was luckily experimenting I do have defenses in 2 of them. They upgraded to lasers automatically which was sweet.
So the situation was, 2 corvettes spawn, one of them with 2 fighters escort, I have only a foxtrot and a condor (second condor is grounded), so I shoot down the lone corvette and return to base while the the escorted corvette does the usual flying about albeit very close to my main base. I ignore it and lift of for the mission with all my soldiers and while I'm flying the corvette starts circling my base and voila - first base attack. And I have not a single soldier there, thats timing for you. Holy shit I prayed. That screen from anti-air defense is also awfully long to read and I sighed in fucking relief when it showed 2000 damage (I assume) and destroyed corvette. So lucky. And then the mission goes all belly up and I have 2 soldiers left all in all...
I had worse, sent a fully equipped and loaded troop transport to mission and UFO intercepted it and shot it down :D
Since I was still in second month I restarted and learned a valuable lesson :)

Happened to me too, was an unkind surprise. Lost only 2 soldiers though. I was wondering what the point of those fighter squadrons was...

I am undecided on the game yet. I dont see an obvious exploit in the tac missions, aside from camping. But even that is dangerous as fuck on Insane, reaction fire triggers not often enough, is not accurate enough, not deadly enough. Aliens shoot too well, armor protects not well enough. There are situation when 5 guys cannot kill a purple android in a single turn... Cant say its too random, I was doing decent enough so if the alien base fell and the terror mission got stopped, might have still won.

Protip: by the time these show up and you don't have laser guns yet, you are fucked. Normal peashooters are next to useless against them.

Depends on how bad you are at it. A reasonably good player will always outperform the autoresolve option by a considerable margin. On higher difficulties it's pretty much mandatory to learn it. If you only autoresolve, you'll have too few planes or too low success rate to handle the # of ufos.

There is at least one matchup early on where you literally can't win due to lack of firepower, yet autoresolve can.

Don't recall exactly which matchup it was, which is why I was vague. It's possible it was patched out and "fixed" since it was probably a bug.

There's a 3x Fighter squad early on, where 3x Foxtrot resolves 10% but 2x Foxtrot + 1x Condor resolves 100%
It's before you get explosives upgrade, and a good reason to keep one Condor in each base.

come on, i know i'm not the sharpest tool in the box but i'm not *that* stupid: i've been trying to play xenonauts again, with some new mods, either xenophobia or xnt hellgate release.
i download xenonauts, i change to community edition, download some more, than proceed with installation.
both start in french, which forces me to delete all the pre-installed mods with the "FRog" tag. then i start them, they're slow, very slow, 2-3 seconds to change screen, but i can live with that.
they crash when trying to overwrite a save from a different mod. it doesn't make much sense but i can move saves manually, not a big deal.
and then i press "end turn" and nothing happens ever again. with both.
so i deleted their folders, put the backup in its place, removed all the FR mods because i got used to it, and everything works, but vanilla/ce is too dull for me :/

what am i missing? what am i doing wrong?

xenophobia and xnt require version 1.09 of the game,if you play with latest patch it wont be compatible.if you have it on steam you can revert to patch 1.09,if you have it on gog like me you will have to torrent it and play with version 1.09.
so nuke your whole installation folder and start over.

the installation guides i read said "ce" not "1.09" :V

oh well, not a problem, three clicks and i'll start downloading the legacy patch.

If you want to play with latest patch you could also try x division mod,and kabills overhaul they seem interesting but the first is not finished and the mod creator got bored and left.

the guides were right, of course.

i tried x-division some months ago but i had to ditch it because of some systematic crashes which don't pop up before some months. that pissed me off to no end.

OK let's rehearse one more time

- you don't need to install the CE if you are going to play xenophobia,as I wrote before its already included in the mod.
-uninstall xenonauts
- install xenonauts
- revert to patch 1.09
Then strictly is this order
- install xnt 5.31 by copying the contents of the zip file to your xenonauts folder.
- install xenophobia 1.50a using the installer and pointing it where your xenonauts folder is.
If you have done it correctly the intro screen will be a silver alien head.

Remember to disable the feature that makes the game to upgrade to the latest patch automatically.
