That'd exactly make decent material for the SJW thread.

GCD is fine. I'd really wait for OpenMW 1.0 though.

My hazy recollection of MW is that in a basic way exploration could fork either towards more exploration or that combat initiated at some point.
As combat initiated I could direct my character to run away {possibly} or my character could fight.
Open world combat seemed to revolve around a creature of some type detecting my character then making a straight line approach to my character very quickly {relative to overall movement speeds}.

Games seem to either stress the strategic planning that turn based combat allows for or the pulse quickening frenetic pace of real time combat.
I can't recall in all the games I have ever played whether there is a combat system {game engine?} that is flexible enough for designers to create the option of having a spectrum of possibilities that can allow both of these conditions to exist in one game.

Doesn't real time kind of negate the need to micro-manage that some turn based games focus on?
For real time combat it would seem to be a "gather better equipment, then adapt movement based combat style to maximize output" whereas turn based allows a player to fine tune character's and strategically {or not} apply tactics, analyze results, and re-tweak until the player is content or mentally stimulated enough to keep trying.

    Morrowind wasn't perfect...what game is?
I'm pretty sure I could re-install and re-experience MW and not be disappointed in the first 5 minutes.
Just depends on an individual's litmus test for playability and enjoyment...

Now that I write that, is not in some way, RPGCodex a place where people write about their personal Litmus tests for gaming enjoyment?

Morrowind with a properly working Radiant AI and Factions system would have been a dream game.

Indeed. Let the mysteries be mysteries. Too much definite talk destroys the charm.

It's a tiny world. Even though it still has about twice as many NPCs as Oblivion, it's still tiny. The "Radiant AI" (actually scripted NPC routines...) systems only make this fault all the more glaring -- seeing an entire "city" fit in a single tavern at nighttime is telling. Making characters mobile ironically led to a decrease in populations, since there was no need to add more characters to keep different spaces full (patrons at bars, shopkeeps, street walkers, etc.) and they just relied on shuffling around two dozen or so NPCs between locations. Plus, these routines often led to characters spouting immershun-shattering banal nonsense about their daily schedule just to allow the PC to find them at any given moment ("first thing in the morning I like to go have my coffee at the Wretched Netch, then I go get a blowjob at the Saucy Seryne's..."). I never minded bars always being open and people always hanging around at the same place, other than the fact that it made stealing ridiculously easy (or challenging, if the object was in the same room as the NPC). At least it didn't feel like a suburbia populated by Ned Flanders clones, like Oblivion.

True simulating something which PC won't and should not see nor care for is waste of RAM and programmers time which could be used making better quests f.e. The role of Blacksmith is to sell buy junk from PC not to told Him his life story and opinion on mudcrabs; too much Simulationism pollutes TES games... This and Bethpizda ''finests'' ineptitude at coding properly hence the NPC talking to walls and falling thru surfaces. Commissar liked the aproach of Two Worlds 2 developers; Important NPCs are at logical places plot puts them so City Guard Captain met at Bar leaves to his Office while the common rabble simulates Nights and Days circles moving from houses to their day jobs and simulating urban crowds far better than empty Skyrim cities. BTW Did He mentioned how far better Vanilla TW2 runs and looks too compared to Skyrim?

TES lore thrives on unanswered questions rather than on unquestioned answers.
It's been built on the foundation that there is no such way as "word of god" that would be in any way accessible to the player.

As googling Morrowind GCD will tell you... Galsiah's Character Development, a mod that makes the leveling process not shit, tying your attributes to progressing your skills directly instead of the awful "select 3 skills on level up that will rise a different amount" and gets rid of leveling (it still increases your level after so many skill gains to avoid problems with scripts that check the PC's level, but you'll never see the level up screen).

OpenMW is a sourceport that's nearly finished, with pretty much just 1 major feature left (and a few minor ones) before the "finished" 1.0 release

Apparantly that C0DA is about Kirkbride's adagio that Tamriel is open-source project, meaning everybody can send his/her fan fiction/art.

Depends, usually true, but sometimes you can still see the effects of something and they are difficult to replicate directly.

That's bullshit. Having someone tell their life story and deepest secrets to the first passing stranger isn't in the least bit simulationist. It's an attempt to inject narrativism into simulation. So is replacement of guild work and open ended quest design with tightly scripted epic rollercoasters of utter linearity.

    Simulationism doesn't pollute TES.
TES games have always functioned the best when they stuck to worldbuilding and extending it into gameplay via simulation. What pollutes TES is forced narrativism and inept one at that. Or is it so much better to have unpickable locks and unkillable/absent NPCs everywhere, so that you can have time-bending Psijjjic monks not teleport glowy buzzing orb away only to do it later so that you can have an epic showdown against unlikeable piss-elf?
