Congrats to crpgaddict. I really enjoyed reading the Fate entries.

I have to say I kind of admire the creator of Fate, not because I think I would enjoy this game (probably the opposite), but because of his utter lack of sane business decisions having influence on game design. Most games, more so nowadays, but to a certain extent also back then are designed along at least some economic principles, but Fate? This game wouldn't have sold one copy less if it had been a third of its size. And most games that large only reuse assets in the later parts, because 99% of players will never see it. But Fate has no problem introducing new monster types and party members with unique portraits 200 hours into the game, and using a new and specific bitmap for a simple switch at the 250 hours just because.
It's no wonder that his company went bankrupt (I've read that he worked 5 years non-stop on Fate), but few people are capable of bringing their vision of a game into reality against all odds in the way he has done.

Lots of crap movies from the '70s and '80s were saved by nude scenes. But with computer games it's different. Personally I can't get excited about pixelated nudity, so I understand CRPG Addict's disappointment.

I admire that a great deal in any art. I wish more modern RPG developers were in a financial position to do the same thing.

Imagine the creative things we'd see in RPGs if they didn't have the worry of having to keep the studio afloat financially.

A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
This comes way too late, but I think the reason why the cRPG Addict takes so much offense is because he is actually a 50-year old dude, not someone on his 20's or 30's and thus isn't used to Internet conventions.
Dude, the texts you could read in the early 90s in the bbs discussion boards :shiver:. Like people arguing (dead serious) that less gifted should be used as a food source for the rest of the population. And that was just your regular bbs, I don't know what those more shady places had in them.

Of the games he mentions that I would like to play again

Captive - I remember liking that quite a lot. Stripped of any meaningful story telling though.

Captive+(Mindscape,+1990,+Amiga)_30.png

It's a cool dungeon crawler, once you got a sweet set of Devices set up you can be walking on the ceiling lobbing bouncing cannonballs around while dodging ED-209 from Robocop.

HOWEVER you DO NOT play the PC version. It's a crap conversion that botched the Gold and XP drops, so you'll be underskilled and underfunded as soon as the third base.

Captive is actually a game I'd like to see CrpgAddict have a go at next - and I mean for a FULL completion run. Visit all the dungeons, blow up all the bases.

I always though it's because he's American, some of them are known to be prickly around nudity, or so I heard

Kudos to him for finishing Fate. :salute:

I could never play more than 2-3hs of that game, 300hs is a ridiculous amount of time to spend on anything, but I'm happy someone did it and recorded the journey for us weak-willed to watch.

That was before the flood tide of dindu and poor people were aloowed on the net. Sadly it will never happen because the less gifted outnumber us by a huge margin.

Well, it's been a fun 7 years, but unfortunately, the blog will be ending soon:

I will probably be forced to give up the blog because Trump has already pledged to cancel my health insurance and de-fund the government organizations that hold most of my contracts. I'll have to go get a real job, maybe move, and won't be able to play Fate: Gates of Dawn in the middle of the day.

No, I think it's someone who's been living in academe-like circles where it's a faux pas to indulge your inner 14 year old that'd giggle when "sex" was mentioned and stole your dads porn. I mean at the end of the day no one (I hope) is fapping to any of this pixelated nudity, so I don't see the point of getting upset about it. Well, I guess that IS part of living in a puritinacal country like the U.S.

OTOH, to play a bit of devil's advocate, I absolutely loathe fan service in anime. I fucking hate it, and it reminds me that so many japanese or otherwise, 14-44 yr old virgins are getting turned on by 2D animated boobs bouncing up and down. It's quite frankly weird as all hell. So maybe that's what he's feeling? and if that's the case, then I guess i can understand it in a way.

Playing Fate as a child consisted in roamming the world, filling my 4 parties in and gaining some levels but that's all because the game crashed whenever I tried to enter a town. I probably tried the classic amiga things (like adding or removing extended memory), I also traded the game for a new one, and it didn't work better. It didn't work on my friends's slighty different amigas either. Now considering it was actually unplayable I can say I have actually spent a lot of time on it. I restared it several times.

I need to replay it someday, last time I tried it didn't work fine but I didn't spend any time trying to make it work properly. Judging by how long it is, even if I ever finish it and nothing is less sure, it would probably take me several years.
Congrats to him, I won't read his diary not to get spoiled (in fact I only rarely read his blog because of that, I don't want to read about games I've never played and who knows which ones I'll actually play) but he's a true RPG lover. :salute:

White mans are not allowed to enjoy anything any more, especially sex which could lead to making more evil white mans. Now if it were pics of a white dude sucking a blg black cock he would not be so upset

Also it's funny to think of a 14 year old playing fate or other super old RPGs.

Try watching stupid fan service anime as an adult human being and tell me you hope no one walks in on you because the bouncing titties are directly aimed at virgin 14 yr old kwans and 40 yr old japanese men.

I mean look at this retardedness:

giphy.gif

You're telling me this doesn't make you feel like an idiot for watching this? I mean it's fucking stupid. And the worst part is I know a bunch of NEET japanese men are drooling and clamoring to see shit like this.

If you enjoy this shit, you might as well be this guy IMO:

Dat cat. :abyssgazer:

Back on the topic of Captive - the ending screen he got is different from the one I got. You see, I have completed the PC version, via copious amount of hex-editing to keep my gold and XP supplies up to par.

I do not recall anything about Trill being hailed as a "Creator of Evil". That's a twist on the game I would surely have noticed when I last played it in 1998.

For the full Captive experience I recommend playing the first two missions, as no new monsters or items appear after that. Mission 2 introduces two or three new monsters that pack quite a punch, and you need to get that far to be able to get access to the biggest and baddest guns.

But to repeat, the PC version sucks and you should play either the Atari ST or Amiga versions.

EDIT: I just read through some of the comments related to his Captive playthrough. If I'm reading this right, he didn't upgrade his weapon stats in tandem with the game progression, meaning he was underpowered through almost the entire game.

Captive's weapon "skill-tree" is like this: You start with two skills: Robotics which determines your health and upgrade options, and Brawling which is your starter weapon skill. Once you raise Brawling to 9 a new weapon skill unlocks (Swords IIRC) and once you raise that to 9 the next one unlocks (Pistols) and so on. Seems to me that he didn't discover this (because the manual doesn't even mention it) until far too late - meaning he gimped himself while playing through the entire game. Despite the game not telling the player how the skill system works, it becomes obvious soon enough that there's a skill system in place because items are sold in the shops that have a clear and telling skill requirement - at this point any player worth their salt would have looked into that matter, and eventually discovered how the skills work. But it seems he didn't.

And then I read about how he tackled the final base - and I see he's not the sharpest tool in the shed. He runs out of ammo and can't use his guns. Does he reload to that save every Captive player has from the last base just before they blow the generator, because there may be something that needs to be done there in preparation for the next base? No, of course he doesn't (dumbass). Does he slowly wear down the enemies with the tried-and-true square dance? No, that's cheating apparently. So what does he do? He uses one of the game's features of charging up the cursor from electrical sockets and firing the electricity it as bolts (a puny, but effective early-game weapon) to kill tons of end-game baddies. As a result he did in 8 hours what I did in 5 hours at the most, and with a broken version of Captive!

Clearly a case of being able to lead a horse to water, but not being able to make it think.

To me shit like that is kinda lulzy, but ultimately mostly boring.

I just find it telling/hilarious that a lefturd is more offended than an ultranationalist super christian right winger like me

I don't approve of degneracy obviously, but really it is no big deal not even as bad as people who say less instead of fewer.

I'm not saying it's a big deal and I'm not saying I agree with his view on nude pixels. I'm just saying that I guess I can understand on some level what he means by being weirded out by certain geek sexual fantasies. Like I said, anime is often ruined by weird ass fan service. And it constantly reminds me that some men my age (33) are watching this with a weird ass perversion. I wish it didn't exists tbh.

It's fucking creepy.
