In any case, you can bypass the stunlock mechanic entirely by playing an archer or a mage.

I wouldn't recommend this. Archer/mage just doesn't suit a Gothic game IMO. And spoils the experience. I WOULD recommend getting a weapon with long reach to stunlock the enemy before they an stunlock you.
Almost ignore the attack rating, as long as it has good reach. That's how important reach is in this game.
There actually aren't that many reach weapons. Avoid two-handed swords and axes like the plague! They actually have SHORTER reach then one-handed arms. Shame that most end-game weapons belong to this category...

There is a very nice scythe lying next to a hut's wall in the first village you land at. Get it! Use it! Love it!
Sure, the attack stat is abysmal. Who cares, that farmer's scythe actually has the longest reach out of all the weapons in the game. A bit later you can upgrade your weapon to a spear. You will painfully feel the reach reduction, but it's still manageable. Then a halberd. Then... long nothing.
Finally when you get enough Strenght to wield an Orc Halberd, Krush Tarach. Use, it! Abuse it! Worship it! Live and die by it! It is the ultimate weapon! Forget all these useless treasure boxes, crafting, there is no weapon that comes close to the orc halberd.

The main issue and difference with G3 melee, in comparison to the older games, is that the character makes a step forward with each swing.
This mean you can't keep a distance and walk into enemies range with each swing and get ganged upon.
If the movement control was separated from basic swinging like in G1,2, the combat would be almost identical and fixed.
The fact that moders behind community patch haven't figured that yet is beyond me.

The story and the world are better than G2. The only area lacking in the world building, is very few dungeons. Reputation is nicely implemented.
Writing is comparable but spread between few times more characters, so characters are not memorable, because everyone has little screen time.
Played mostly as a mage and enjoyed it. The weakest Gothic game no doubt, but not that far behind G2 for me, G1 is the best of them.
