When they released 7 the engine already looked dated. But there's nothing wrong with models, portraits or the backgrounds inside the buildings.

You are comparing games that are many many years apart. Old graphics can look better than new ones and in many cases they do. Morrowind > Oblivion and M&M VI > M&M X are some personal examples. Oh and they did a Nwn 1 style game with updated graphics back in the day: Nwn2. And it wasn't as good as you would expect.

I love this series, but the 6-8 trilogy are some of the ugliest RPG's ever made. While X isn't that good looking either, it's miles more tolerable.

It's amazing how nearly identical sprites looked good in HoMMIII and shit in MM6-8

6 looked like shit, 7 looked pretty good and 8 looked ok.
