Be it roaming world maps, exploring townships, or plundering dungeons—the best RPGs have and continue to leverage the genre's cornerstones to great effect. It's for this reason that the The Ultimate RPG Handbook celebrates role-players old and new with a host of interesting, entertaining and engaging features.

In our Complete History of RPGs feature, Richard Cobbett chronicles the genre's past and present—from the '80s through to today. We also explore the origins of The Witcher 3's esteemed Family Matters quest, and ask RPG developers to speculate on the future of the genre. Elsewhere, Chris sits down with the Dragon Age creative team and discovers what makes BioWare tick; and we meet the makers of Skywind, the massive mod that's moving Morrowind to Skyrim.

There's loads across 148 pages—you can order the print edition of PC Gamer Presents: The Ultimate RPG Handbook from My Favourite Magazines. Digital versions will be made available from iTunes and Zinio soon.

Here's what's inside:
  • The complete history of the RPG genre, from the ‘80s through to today.
  • The making of The Witcher 3 Family Matters quest.
  • Chris sits down with the Dragon Age creative team to talk Inquisition.
  • We meet the makers of the ambitious Skywind mod.
  • Andy returns to Skyrim - does The Elder Scrolls V still hold up today?
  • Tom runs down the best, dumbest, and most enjoyable action-RPGs.
  • And much more!

From the makers of:
Dragon Age 2
The best RPG combat ever. Not gamings best story, but maybe its best storytelling. Darker, sexier, better.

Andy returns to Skyrim - does The Elder Scrolls V still hold up today?

It's clearly too old. Only games released in the last 2 months matter because ad revenue.

Wanna read (and steal info), but damn, 18.99 dollars is a lot for one magazine. I'm a third-world immigrant living in Tokyo, don't have the money to spend on this right now...

This is why the CRPG Book is free. :P

Well, it says "vol. 1", so maybe they'll make 3-4 other books? 150 pages each... But who knows, right?

"Flip for more ->"

Is their audience too stupid to understand how a magazine works?

Also why pad a magazine with random reviews of months / years old games?

The only reason Dragon Age Inquisition should be in a RPG handbook is to show how far Bioware has fallen.

Top priority things to feature in your 28-page RPG guide:

-A single quest from a game that came out a year ago
-The exemplar of the RPG genre, our lord and savior Skyrim
-A mod for the above game that will probably never get released
-(Probably) a few pages dedicated to a rushed, inaccurate summary of older titles

Who is this guide even written for? RPG enthusiasts are not going to like the fact that the most of the games featured are mainstream popamole titles, whereas your average gamer probably doesn't care about the "the complete history of RPGs". And I doubt either group would fork over 15$ for this mess.

"The Ultimate X Handbook" is a bit of an awkward name for what's essentially a magazine/periodical, isn't it? I mean, the material is essentially incomplete, consisting of eclectic writings without any overarching order.
