What makes it any sort of good at all?

Don't give me no wishy-washy 'it felt like playing D&D with my loser friends in 7th grade' shit, I want its qualities listed.

Personally, I hate exposition in journals. It either puts words in the character's mouth that I, as the player, don't want to see there (especially when it tries to tell me how I/the character react to or feel about narrative events), or it b) clarifies poor ingame exposition/does the player's thinking for him by spelling things out that should have been made clear within the game itself: in conversation, notes, etc. Baldur's Gate in particular was really bad about both of those.

The problem is that PS:T revolves around the concept of the Nameless One's journal, yet the journal itself is just a vanilla journal. The journal is basically the manifestation of the Nameless One's identity, the goal the Nameless One is seeking. It would have been nicer, but perhaps confusing, if the journal pieces were actually indexed by summaries based on interactive cut scenes where YOU decide the past of the Nameless One. How you deal with the cut scene depends on what appears in the journal.

If pieces of it were more scattered, and out of order, then the game itself could have been less linear and still told a story - but it would have been the story the player themselves created for the Nameless One based on what they did in the journal cutscenes.

But like I said, that could get confusing.

Really, my ideal 'journal' is just a detailed list of objectives (no narratives, just revealed relevant facts), a conversation log (searchable would be nice!), and a basic editable notepad.

So, kind of like a super charged version of Spiderweb Software's journals?

That's still beside the point. PS:T is all about the journal of the Nameless One. It should have been more than just your typical CRPG journal, even if it's index, referenced and cross referenced, searchable, and technocolored.
