You could just play it now with the fan translation patch, which was more polished than Reverie's official "localization". There are several factors as to why SC is more popular than Elite. I think a big one is aesthetic appeal. In Elite, all of the spaceships IMO look unattractive and have the same general aesthetic. I thought the plots of Gen 3 and Gen 4 were cool high fantasy stuff, with the bad guys wanting to literally reshape the geography of the world.
