Are you talking about playing on an actual C64 or just using an emulator?

If you're thinking about playing on an actual C64, I would highly, highly advise against it. The loading times on many games are just excruciating. I laugh whenever I see complaints about load times in a modern game because you have no idea what bad load times are until you've sat waiting five minutes for a C64 game to load. And then had to wait another five minutes when you enter a dungeon. And then wait another five minutes when you come back out. And another five minutes when you enter a town.

I doubt I would have read nearly as many books as I have if I didn't always keep one near my C64 to pass the time while games were loading.

And to think I just picked one up for ten bucks. :(

if you got one, go with that, even if emulating goes faster nothing really beats the genuine feel of operating a true beast.

Maybe use something like

http://www.kotinet.com/1541/
http://www.64hdd.com/64hdd.html
http://www.cancarpet.com/saymantek/c64tpc_en.html

But those still require a PC to be connected to the C64. Anybody know of a standalone flash hardrive style solution for C64?

As a simple solution try to find some of those turbo cartridges that were popular back in the days. They don't work with all games but when they do it's a significant improvement.

Edit: I knew I had seen something like that before, and here it is: http://jderogee.tripod.com/project1541.htm

See http://benheck.com/04-05-2009/commodore ... are-laptop for a sweet demonstration of it, among other goodness.

Bard's Tales and Gold Box series are the ones I spent the most time on.

Alos dabbled in Magic Candle, Ultima and anything else I could get my hands on.

Why, without the long loading times there would not be and time to play the small mini games that they used to put in there. So it was not always a dull wait.

I am less fond of the tape loading times though, and error sensitivity. I like the emulators but the sound never gets done down to 100% like the original.
