I'm trying to play Azrael's Tear in it and I'm having quite the hard time. I've tried messing around with the frameskip and the configurations but it is still the same: The game is fucking unplayable. It lags beyond imagination regardless of what I do, and worse: it crashes all the time.

I suppose it is complicated to run 3d games on dosbox, but it is the only way to run this game on XP. Here is my dosbox config, file. Any suggestion would be much appreciated, this game looks awesome and I'm eager to play it.

Also worth mentioning, I'm using an exe file that came along with the torrent. It starts the game through it, without needing to mess around with dosbox startup.

[render]
# frameskip -- How many frames DOSBox skips before drawing one.
# aspect -- Do aspect correction, if your output method doesn't support scaling this can slow things down!.
# scaler -- Scaler used to enlarge/enhance low resolution modes.
# Supported are none,normal2x,normal3x,advmame2x,advmame3x,hq2x,hq3x,
# 2xsai,super2xsai,supereagle,advinterp2x,advinterp3x,
# tv2x,tv3x,rgb2x,rgb3x,scan2x,scan3x.
# If forced is appended (like scaler=hq2x forced), the scaler will be used
# even if the result might not be desired.

[cpu]
# core -- CPU Core used in emulation: normal, simple, dynamic, auto.
# auto switches from normal to dynamic if appropriate.
# cycles -- Amount of instructions DOSBox tries to emulate each millisecond.
# Setting this value too high results in sound dropouts and lags.
# You can also let DOSBox guess the correct value by setting it to max.
# The default setting (auto) switches to max if appropriate.

[mixer]
# nosound -- Enable silent mode, sound is still emulated though.
# rate -- Mixer sample rate, setting any devices higher than this will
# probably lower their sound quality.
# blocksize -- Mixer block size, larger blocks might help sound stuttering

# prebuffer -- How many milliseconds of data to keep on top of the blocksize.

What kinda rig you run it on? IIRC it's one of those rare games that requires a monster rig to run properly in DosBox.

Try with vdmsound and dgvesa (it's a part of the dgvoodoo package).

Really? I'm using a pentium 4(2.1 GHZ), 2 gb ram, 256 mb video.

I tried updating dosbox, didn't change a thing.

Looks like it's the CPU bottlenecking the rest of your hardware. DosBox is, first and foremost, a CPU hog, much like any other emulator out there.

Just FYI - downloaded it yesterday and managed to get it running using dgvesa and vdmsound. Just configured sound and music, made sure to edit azrael.bat to call up dgvesa.com before the game starts and viola. You'll also probably need to get some dos mouse driver.

The game seems to run a little too fast, but you can slow it down using Mo'Slo or something.

Just to further confirm what madbringer wrote.

For me System Shock works way too slow in DosBox, and is stretched when run vanilla due to 16:10 monitor.

But dgvesa + vdmsound did the trick: full speed + 4:3 aspect ratio.
