Which version:

OC - All kinds of junk you throw together.
MotB - Essences or a suitable replacement.
BG2 - NPC crafting - that dwarf/imp.
KingComrade - Crafting is for suckers.

All 3 of those suck, to be honest, but if I had to pick one of them I'd go with BG 2 as its the least painful to put up with and doesn't involve you reading over spreadsheets to calculate when to bring in the bard so you can make a mithral breastplate for your ranger or whatever.

Out of the NWN2 games, I'd say Storm of Zehir did it better - where you just had to have some items in your inventory, stand near the bench, and so long as any one of your party members was competent enough for the skill/spell necessities you would just activate the recipe and voila. It was like BG2s but with some expansion and didn't require talking to people in one specific place, but rather just being at a workshop.

BG2. Because all instances of 'throw various shit together' are usually retardedly overpowered.

I never craft anything in any NWN type games I play. In order to make something worthwhile for whatever character build I've done essentially requires a strategy guide or gamefaqs visit and collecting all that garbage is really stupid.

Here's how it should be done:
-Kill major boss or whatever
-Get a shiny item the local mage is looking for
-Choose from a list of half a dozen enchants
-Mage puts said enchant on your gear

In terms of frequency, this happens maybe 5 times throughout a 40 hour game.

Where's Fallout 3?

No, really. It has a good basic system for crafting and repairs, taken to a ridiculous lengths.

So far 23 for some form of crafting and 9 against. The BG2 method has a slight lead over the MotB way.

Personally I like the BG2 method best. It eliminates a lot of the junk loot that fills up your inventory (like the OC) and doesn't involve a made up game mechanic (like MotB).

Also it eliminates the need for the PC/NPCs to use skill points and feats on the crafting skills.

Anyway crafting of any sort will not be in the first chapter of the mod
