I have explored everything and have completed most quests, with the next step being finding Ravel. I've asked every npc and it seems that the only person that knows how to find her is Quell, who is located in the private sensorium. Previously I joined the Godsmen, so now I ask:

Does one have to be a sensate to progress in the game and find ravel or is there someone else that knows the way? If yes, then what is the point of factions if you have to dump them for sensates anyway?

You can convince the guard that you are already a sensate because you were one in a past life. That's the only way to avoid joining I can think of.

There is also a certain npc you have to talk to in Clerk's Ward, that leads to another npc, who will remind you that once, you were indeed a sensate. After that you can just simply say this to the guard and he'll let you in the private sensorium. No need to join them. Just talk/do quests in Clerk's Ward area and you'll stumble upon this particular npc.
