Goichi Suda and Hidetaka Suehiro have revealed the first Hotel Barcelona gameplay.

No More Heroes creator Suda (who often goes by the name Suda51) and Deadly Premonition creator Suehiro (often known as Swery65) first announced in 2019 that they wanted to make a horror game called Hotel Barcelona.

Hotel Barcelona is a 2.5D action game that parodies slasher films, written and directed by Suehiro from an original idea by Suda51. It will be released in 2024 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC via Steam.

The trailer above, which reveals the first gameplay footage of the title since its announcement, premiered during Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show broadcast on Thursday.

“Hotel Barcelona, the place where all the action takes place, is an integrated leisure complex, featuring facilities such as a casino and camping ground around the hotel to create a single, living world with seven smaller worlds inside,” Suehiro told Xbox Wire.

“Due to the fact that Suda-san and I are making the game, the worlds each have some twisted tricks, and each of them has a serial killer boss. The objective of the game is to somehow defeat the boss, and clear the seven worlds.”

He also said the bosses in the game are not a tribute to any single movie character.

“They’re more like an embodiment of a subgenre of horror films. For example, there are many subgenres of horror, such as slasher movies, zombie horror, summer camps, babysitters, and so on. We came up with the idea of our bosses through the tropes that each subgenre has built up over their time.”

I think it looks rubbish. Expected something more than this from these two.

I thought Killer7 was interesting, mostly because of its art direction and sound design. Can't say I'm fond of Suda's other games and the whole “punk” thing – it often feels forced, though, I recently pick up Shadows of the Damned, and I have Killer is Dead somewhere in my download history.

Grasshopper's games have some very cool UI elements and art assets, but gameplay mechanics often tend to be unremarkable, at least from what I've seen.

Swery65 is even less impressive. Deadly Premonition shamelessly pulls a lot from David Lynch. Irc they had to make significant changes to DP to avoid potential legal action (because of the similarities to Twin Peaks). I suppose it's interesting to see a Japanese person's interpretation of Twin Peaks, but does that make Swery65 an auteur?

Not interested in this but the funniest part of the trailer was the blatant Paranoid rip-off song. Like really, that's the choice you're going with?

Trailer was hilarious. Between the music and the japanese "auteur" dialogue

A shark. That was a shark!

And the space alien cosmic horror with neon tits and vagina dick.

I wish we had more auteur gamedevs from less weird places though.

Edit: got to say Suda51 doesn't look so thrilled in the above video.

Seeing that Xbox logo has become a clear indication that the game will be shit. A seal of decline, of sorts.

My team has the sexiest and deadliest waifus you can recruit.
NMH3 made me lose all faith in Suda. Hack and slash game with no proper levels, ran and looked like shit and the writing was awful. I don't think he'll make anything worthwhile again. Never played Deadly Premonition, but apparently the sequel was as dogshit as NMH3. Auteurs should team up with people who can deliver a functional product and tell them when their ideas suck or are out of scope.

Need to find a decent LP to make a proper judgement.
I watched the YMS LP for a while. FPS tanked on the open world and it had some ludicrous time wasting mechanic where NPC's don't talk to you if you don't shower often enough, but showering at the hotel costs money, which is convoluted to make if people don't talk to you. Something like that, it was like watching a fever dream.

Looks like shit, gameplay aside, it has that ugly plastic / mobile game look, reminds me of Bloodstained.
