Why did Morrowind sell so well?

Morrowind sold so well because it was a great RPG. I know it's not very popular on these forums, but I'm thinking about installing Morrowind and playing it some more. Even today it's so much more an RPG than Oblivion ever will be. You could actually Role Play in Morrowind.
You could role play in Morrowind as much as you could in Oblivion.

That is, if you consider role-playing to be "playing make believe."

Meh, I've lost my fanboy luster for either of the games now.

Well at least in MW you had to be able to cast spells to rise in the mage guild...

Morrowind sold so well because of two things.
One it was an Xbox title and the first and only sandbox rpg at the time for the xbox crowd.
And On the pc side the Elder Scrolls Construction Set.
The Only other Rpg at the time that came with one was Neverwinter Nights whose construction set was supposed to have been mainly used for multiplayer.
Morrowind's on the other hand allowed you to add custom quests/races/weapons/npcs etc all into a game you were already playing or to even create a total conversion and make your own seperate game something the modding community really took advantage of.

Had Bethesda simply released the game like the xbox version without the construction set.
It would have sold probably not as much and would have been quickly forgotten unlike today where mods and conversions for the PC version is still going strong.

Morrowind sold to me because some of it looks like a Yes album cover.

Sure, there were lots of things to do, and a minigame can be played in which you try to tie as many quest elements into one sweep as possible, to reduce backtracking.

Which makes it a bit of a resource management game. Time being the resource. In the real world, not in the game.

Looked good, shit to do.
Can make stuff.

Not too bad a story.

Emergent behaviors/reactive world would have been nice.

No, in fairness, it was better in Morrowind. Still awful, but there were in general far more choices and so on available in Morrowind than in Oblivion.
That said, it was hardly the standout feature of either game.

Surprisingly some Morrowind quests were very mature and intelligent, but the game was too static and boring. I like gameplay that sugests something about the world and the power relations between social factions. The game balance in Morrowind didn't made any sense neither character reactions but the world was very well designed and the lore was also very good. If they were capable of translating thr lore and the world into believable gameplay and proper reactions then it could be a great game, but they couldn't.

Why "sex" is the most searched single word in Google?

From old habit, I always include the words "sex", "porn" and "cum" in the "without the words" field, to avoid getting lots of porn sites listed, when porn is the last thing I want to find.
I wonder if the words in the "Without" field is included in the "most searched word" count?

I think two of the reasons why MW sold so well is that it also appealed to female players, with the ability to use your avatar as a mannequin and switching between 1st and 3rd view.
Judging from the posts on the official forums, the fact that you don't *have* to go around killing anything that moves, but can instead go around shopping appeals to many female players. Typically, a large share of the mods involve adding clothes and shops and "companions".
Which brings me to reason two: the extreme ease of modding most of the aspects of the game. Any idiot, me included, can make a MW mod.

After frequenting the official forums I also learnt that the $uits don't really offend the intelligence of gamers when they decide to put babes in "chain mail bikinis" in ads and covers. The overhwlming majority of the players posting screen shots at the MW forums play female vampires in extrenely skimpy "goth" clothing....

How is reporting what I actually see "sexist"?
