I have some dwarves left to claim if anyone's interested;
- a short, fat miner who likes devourers and prefers familiar routine
- an emerald eyed carpenter/mason/armorsmith who detests bats and is concerned about rejection and ridicule
- a muscular stone crafter/mechanic with a long mustache who likes platinium and admires tradition
- an incredibly tough, peach skinned cook/grower who likes swamp wiskey and duck and dislikes intellectual discussions

EDIT: oh, and first update coming up!

Given that I started the incredibly prestigious cooking thread in General Discussion (link in my sig), it's obvious who the cook should be.

I guess I would be the miner. I am of average height and build, but I like caves, and I don't know what a devourer is in DF context but it sounds like some kind of Lovecraftian horror, which I am of course totally down with. And as for preferring familiar routine, I enjoy a familiar routine of getting stoned and playing computer games.

The following are extracts from the diaries of Estilerith and his companions, from the early days of Anusblaze.

JagreenLern’s diary, 2nd of Slate

While Estilerith pretends to run things, we have elected an informal leader to make the real decisions. Krash will design the basics of the fort. Apparently she’s done this kind of work before she found her calling in food production. I don’t think Estilerith’s will notice, and we could do without too many insane projects, at least for a while.

Krash’s diary, 9th of Slate

I’ve barely gotten promoted and already there’s trouble: seems like badgers have taken to harassing R00fles! He got away safely, but maybe the wildlife here isn’t as meek as we thought.

Krash’s diary, 20th of Slate

Ok, I’ve come up with a basic fort design. We’ll build the great hall one step underground, then add a kitchen and a growing room south of it which we’ll connect to the river. That way we can grow things and make booze. I like booze.

JagreenLern found some native platinum while digging the main hall! Looks like our legacy is secured.

Krash’s diary, 27th of Slate

I assigned bandaid to fetch our roaming livestock. I don’t want any enraged badgers eating what we may need in the future.
Also, our pressing lack of defenses is now solved (at least temporarily).

Estilerith’s diary, 12th of Felsite

I was appalled yesterday when I noticed that the main hall of our beautiful home is but a rough stone floor. When I pointed this out to Krash, she suggested I do something about it. But I’m a leader, am I not? Yet here I am, smoothing stone like some commoner!

Krash’s diary, 15th of Felsite

We need to start growing things as quick as possible, so I’ve assigned digging out the growing room top priority. I can hear JagreenLern working on it even as I write these words.

Ulminati is such a babe; built like a battering ram and tougher than me even. I’d let her tug my beard any day of the week!

Krash’s diary, 2nd of Malachite

It’s calm. Too calm. I sometimes watch the river, half expecting skeletal carp to surge from the dark waters to murder us all. It’s happened before.

Krash’s diary, 5nd of Malachite

Ask and ye shall receive. Only we didn’t ask for migrants at all! We’re not even self-sufficient in food and already the leeches arrive. Maybe they want the platinum? Well they can’t have it, it’s mine!

Krash’s diary, 6th of Malachite

I may have been too harsh. The migrants seem useful for the most part, except of course the soapmaker. What’s soap good for anyway? All it does is removes a dwarf’s protective layer of grime.

In any case, I have compiled a list of our new companions:

A novice weaponsmith – no complaints here, weapons kill things and are therefore dwarven by definition.

A forge specialist – seems well versed in both weaponry, armor, smithing, metalcrafting; in other words a real haul. I have no idea why someone like that would even consider coming to an outpost like Anusblaze.

A novice milker – I’m not really sure why she’s here, but I suppose she can always haul stuff. Now that I think about it, we do need a second miner.

The soapmaker – at first I wrote him off as useless, but apparently he’s a decent sword-user. Now if only we had a sword… Also, he is a worshipper of As apparently. Yeah.

Krash’s diary, 8th of Malachite

We have now initiated the Final Solution to deal with all those annoying trees around camp. I also suggested to Estilerith that Oscar should be making things out of stone, not hauling. Our Dear leader is so much less annoying when he believes he’s giving the orders.

Due to overwhelming positive response to the second update, here's another one!

The following are extracts from the diaries of Estilerith and his companions, from the early days of Anusblaze.

Krash’s diary, 27th of Malachite

Today Estilerith complained (more than usual) that there is no application for his great intellect. I asked him if we should arrange for some dwarfs to get hurt so he could practice, and he actually hesitated before muttering no. Better keep an eye open.

Krash’s diary, 4th of Galena

All that remains to be done in the growing room project is a little flooding to muddy the floor. While we wait for the floodgates to be installed, I’ve sent Kib (the new miner girl) to dig out a barrack and an infirmary. JagreenLern is enjoying a well-deserved break.

Krash’s diary, 16th of Galena

We’re running out of booze! And we haven’t even planted anything! I hope some traders show up soon. But on a better note, one of our rabbits gave birth to bunnies today. Guess what’s for dinner?

Krash’s diary, 1st of Limestone

Autumn is here! When you think about it, autumn is really dwarven. The trees’ foliage becomes like blood and pools around its source, and that pesky sun doesn’t show up as much.

Krash’s diary, 2nd of Limestone

Kib got the dubious honor of connecting the river to the flooding corridor. Bandaid made this amusing illustration:

2nkho2g.jpg

I don’t know if the water is sluggish around these parts or if it’s the cold, but Kib made it out with plenty of time to spare.

In any case we are now ready to begin farming. Ulminati is scraping together all the seeds she can find while I design farm plots.

Krash’s diary, 11th of Limestone

Estilerith’s beginning to suspect we’re not really listening to him. Maybe it’s the lack of opulent throne rooms. Oscar will make a few statues to his glory or something, that should shut him up.
We’ve also got a hospital now.

Krash’s diary, 14th of Limestone

That Oscar has some weird taste.

Estilerith’s diary, 10th of Sandstone

All that wonderful platinum just laying around, what a waste. It should be used for some kind of memorial of my rule, so that future generations may find inspiration. I’ve commanded Krash to figure something out – she seems like a trustworthy fellow, unlike all the others.

Krash’s diary, 14th of Sandstone

More migrants? They’re in pretty bad shape, that’s what you get for crossing the mountains in late autumn. They told us tales of a terrible creature, a natural enemy of dwarfs, roaming about near our fort.

You can’t have the booze it’s ours!!! :x
(Feels like a description of a dwarf to me tbh)

Krash’s diary, 15th of Sandstone

To combat the vicious booze-thieving threat, I’ve sent Momuz to train with R00fles in our brand new barracks. What they lack in armor they’ll make up in courage, I’m sure.
I’ve had a thought about all the platinum. Estilerith’s idea of a monument isn’t all bad, but I will make a small alteration: it will be dedicated to me.

Krash’s diary, 12th of Timber

Finally a caravan! With all the rock crap we’ve made, we should be able to buy most of what we need. Led Balber, the dwarven liaison, met with Estilerith. I’m sure our supposed leader enjoyed the attention greatly, even though he didn’t have an office to receive in.

vh9v74.jpg

Bought some food and drink, an extra pick, a steel breastplate, some silk and some leather. With this, winter shouldn’t be a problem.

Krash’s diary, 2nd of Moonstone

We’ve been sleeping in hospital beds and on stone floors for far too long. I’ve assigned JagreenLern to dig us a solution. If anyone can do it, it’s him!

Krash’s diary, 24th of Moonstone

A little schematic of our latest improvements:

Krash’s diary, 19th of Opal

We’ve gone from near starvation to so much food we don’t even have the barrels to put it in. A success if I ever saw one! And should we for some reason lack reserves, there’s always honey – as long as someone volunteers for a few beestings.

250jv3p.jpg

Krash’s diary, 1st of Obsidian

I’ve become wary of Estilerith’s demands and the constant decision making. But before I resign, there is something I must do.

Krash’s diary, 1st of Granite

Or maybe not. The others want a turn at leading the fort right away. Well, have fun suckers! I’m off to try that new brewing technique.

My only regret is that I never got the chance to build that Automatic Platinum Brewmaster 5000. And I’d been planning for so long. Oh well, I doubt I’d been allowed to use up all our precious metals anyway.

The last page of the Krash’s diary is blackened and barely legible.

Stats for the fort at the end of Krash’s rule:

I PMd him a few days ago to keep him aware of the LP and he still hasn't answered. We should keep things agile here so if everybody agrees, we could wait him until tomorrow and if he doesn't appear, the next in the list should continue playing and I will place heechee two positions down in the list.

BTW, you did a lot of work in the first year :salute:

Fair enough, then, as heechee is MIA it's Zdzisiu's turn...

*Summon Zdzisiu*

I'll move them to the bottom of the list from now on.

This is really cool even though I don't understand what's going on! What's all those yellow and grey boulder things that are literally all over the floor? Raw ore or something?

Raw ore, rock etc. Whenever you mine a square of soil/rock there's a (fairly high) chance it'll yield a unit of whatever resource was contained in the tile. Unless you assign a metric shitton of dwarves to haul rock (and a huge area assigned as a pile to haul it to), most of your fortress is going to be littered like that.

It's the reason my fortresses always use stonecrafting for their primary economy. Ore is easy to get rid of, but rock just lasts too damned long unless you have 3-4 full time expert stone crafters/masons.

If we still have an abundance of unclaimed rock once my reign ticks over, I'll make sure we build the mother of all statue gardens. I'll probably even place a lot of it outside, so our fort entrance looks like some freakish, dwarven version of the easter islands!
