The battles in North Africa continue...
Next mission briefing. In this one the goal is to drive the Americans off from the area around the village Sbeitla. Apparently due to previous success the American were in great disorder, however they have been given time to regroup and dig in. There should be mines in the are so caution is required.
Not a whole lot to change here, interesting enough we do have two Italian infantry squads available in this mission.
They are some what less experienced that the german soldiers but still decent enough.
Here are our forces
And here to the south west the American are.
The northern approach is apparently mined to another road will have to be taken.
Deploying the forces some what away from the houses.
Pretty much immediately as the mission is started radio contact is lost with HQ due to terrain, this will impair us from being able to call in possible reinforcements or air/artillery support.
At least one American tank is spotted approaching from the south. Looks like a Sherman m4
And there is more. Forces are moved into position to fire upon the approaching Americans.
I was afraid that tank would run over some infantry, however it is destroyed just before it reaches them.
First casualty so far, possibly from an enemy hand grenade.
With so much fire power focused on this narrow area they stand little chance.
However the enemy attacks from the north west as well.
Luckily we had a tank there to spot them approaching preventing a surprise attack form the rear which could have been devastating.
The first shot connects, but doesn't kill.
A Pz IV is moved in to hit the side of any tank coming through the pass.
Another Pz IV is damaged and loses both it's main and secondary armament. Looking at the picture one might blame the trigger happy crew of the AA gun, but it shouldn't be able to do much damage even as such close range.
Two kills are scored in quick succession. The American forces in North Africa have a great deal more equipment than the Afrikakorps. Fortunately ours are considerably more experienced as can be seen.
The last tank is destroyed, and this threat ended.
However another appears in the distance, American ground attack craft.
A Pz IV narrowly avoids certain death as the bomb falls just a couple of meters away from it.
having used up their bombs they begin harassing ground troops with auto cannon instead. It hits an AA gun but only manages to damage the wheels.
They return for another pass and manage to destroy the other AA gun, they are really intent on destroying those AA defenses.
Though even if the other gun is now immovable, it is still operational and manages to shoot down a plane.
And it crashes down on a cliff.
The damaged Pz IV doesn't have much fire power left, but it is still good for scouting.
A possible spot for radio contact with HQ is spotted, it is however held by American forces that will have to be neutralized first.
The remaining AA gun is destroyed by enemy fire from this position.
The surviving crew captures and abandoned M4 sherman. It's tracks have been damaged, though it might still be used in a possible future defensive mission.
It would appear that there is at least one heavy machine gun and one artillery piece over there. However we can use our own artillery and tanks to deal with that.
Quite a few shells are shot however none hit close enough to destroy they gun or disable the crew.
And then a hit right on, removing that threat for good.
The house where the machine gunner was most likely hiding is leveled as well.
Preparing to move on an ominous sound is hear
It's the sound of artillery shells in the air. Fortunately it appears to be aimed at the village where there are no soldiers left. A shell that of it's mark might kill some one however.
Moving south west
And artillery shell hits close enough to kill one of the crew men of one of our own guns.
In fact the entire crew is most unfortunately killed.
The crew from the other destroyed AA gun take over the gun. They are less experienced with this, but should still use it well.
The shells keep coming, good thing they don't know our current position.
Moving up the possible radio position enemy artillery on the island in the river is spotted, though we don't see it here.
Further losses are suffered from enemy artillery
It might be that these guns are responsible. There is quite a few
Additional tanks are spotted
Radio contact is established with HQ. We now have reinforcements available as well as plenty of air support, which should aid greatly in the attack.
a Pz IV manages to get into a position where it has a clear shot at an enemy gun.
Artillery bombardment continues
And a shell manages to kill one of the reinforcing soldiers that just arrived.
A Pz IV continues down by the river bed, however the enemy tanks are not in line of sight yet.
However as soon as it is able to shot at it, a direct hit takes it out.
As air support arrives to help with the guns on the island they spot enemy tanks moving north, potentially attempting to outflank us. This is valuable information.
A stuka drops it's load on a American Tank.
The tank is hit directly and destroyed. It doesn't hit the nearby gun, but shrapnel must have gotten the crew any way.
With that an seizing the island shouldn't be hard and armor and infantry are moved in. On the hill you can see the previously damaged pz IV. It is still useful up there for radio communications as well as spotting.
No idea where those tanks are going. Though perhaps they are going around the mines.
A bomb destroys an enemy gun. One less to deal with later, excellent.
The same plane later spots massive forces dug in defending the northern approach, good thing we didn't chose that route.
The tanks are indeed trying the go around and hit us form the back.
However the tanks from the reinforcements hold this way.
It appears bother our forces and the American are surprised to see each other as they reach the top of the hill and the fighting begins at very shot range.
A tank nearly hits one of our guns, though only one soldier dies.
However passing through they are subject to heavy fire.
The island looks clear, we now got an excellent spot from which to attack the main American forces.
An American tank however kills the crew of one of the guns. I knew I should have moved them.
A Panzer IV takes revenge however as can bee seen here.
However one gun remains on the island, some other soldiers must have maned it again after the original crew died.
A shot from a Panzer IV ends it existence quickly. Pictures top right: A stuka.
The keep coming from the north.
More losses, however it is to late to move them now.
A Panzer IV hits the responsible tank, however it doesn't penetrate despite the short distance.
Another unsuccessful hit
The third hit however manages to penetrate.
More American forces are spotted on the small island. These guys must have the hide in plain sight feat or something since they don't get seen in plain sight.
Well they are so few that they are not a threat. However a couple of ours die in the fight and a couple of soldiers panic. (The ones with the red bars)
Most of the remaining forces are moved in.
Looks like the beats way to approach is to go around and attack from the west
Coming up behind making it hard to the enemy guns to hit
Rolling by the river ( and tank wrecks though I have never heard a song about that)
Moar artillery, they should probably aim for something else.
An american M3 APC is captured by one of the crew men of the tank since it doesn't need a full crew any way being damaged.
Tanks are moving in
Almost there now
Well there are at least no land mines here.
A heavy machine gun and a light Bofors AA gun is defending this area. However that is no threat to medium armor.
The machine gun is blown up by some high explosive, however a couple of tanks are spotted under camo net, they could be troublesome.
The first shot at them misses by a lot
The second shot connects and penetrates. It's an older stuart so even the Pz III could deal with it easily.
The other gets its turret damaged which should prevent it from being a threat
However an enemy shot from an unknown source damages the tracks on a Pz IV an immobilizes it
Bombers are called in to deal with enemy artillery positions.
And a couple more of those heavy 105mm guns are spotted to the North by the planes. These might have been the ones that immobilized the tank.
The pz III fires at it.
it is a successful hit, however one remains.
Those planes got quite a few guns. And enemy tanks are spotted approaching from the north.
One gets hit and is destroyed
a Panzer IV left on the island is responsible. It's the F1 model with the short gun which is more inaccurate the the later versions, but it performed well any way
Another tank is destroyed
And an APC is immobilized
While the last tank is destroyed
Bombs are dropped on one of the remaining guns
Don't think much of it remains now.
With that the only threat left are American infantry hiding in the building with AT weapons.
Tanks deal with them easily from a safe distance where the hand held weapons aren't likely to hit
having blown half the village into rubble the last resistance is wiped out, fleeing or other wise neutralized.
Victory.
Once again a solid victory, not a single tank lost this time though couple were damaged, though not beyond repair. Which is good because every loss is felt a lot more severely by us than by the enemy forces.
Next up will be the battle of Kaiserin... the Kasserine Pass.
