Update #1 - Old Friends

We stopped last time when we set out for Altdorf. Observe the nice map, and trust me when I tell you the map of SotHR looked way better. (Don't.)

image002.jpg

Once there, we are summoned to an audience of prime importance...

image003.jpg

From left to right, Sven Carlsson ( ), ze emperor (I think >_>) ( :!: ) and, of course, Morgan ( )

:!: Ah, Bernhardt. You came to Altdorf promptly. But not as fast as your friend Sven Carlson.
 Good to see you again, Morgan.
 Good to see you too, Sven. But I wasn't summoned here for a chat about old times, was I?
:!: Indeed not. Carlson has requested military aid for the region of the Border Princes.
 The Border Princes are in desperate need of aid. Hordes of greenskins have swarmed into our land. We battle night and day to protect the passes into the empire but the enemy is too numerous. Without reinforcements we'll soon be overwhelmed.
 Why are the greenskins invading in such numbers?
 I am not sure... But it seems as if they are driven north by some unseen power or a kind of cloud of fear at their backs. Whatever that unknown force is, it terrifies even the greenskins. Unaided we can not stop the rampaging orcs from breaking through and threatening the empire itself.
:!: We are aware of the danger to our empire and must deal with this menace. Bernhardt, I want you to move south with Carlsson.
 I deal in gold coin for red blood... or green blood. My army will fight for money. The glory we'll leave to others.
:!: Yes, yes, that is understood. You will be well rewarded if you return victorious. And knowing you you will pick up loot on the way. Now go and protect the empire.
 I will gladly place my troops under your command, Morgan.
 Wise decision... we head for the Border Princes!

A lengthy journey later we stumble upon our goal, the greenskin forces. Carlsson, the leader of the militia and an old ally of war, lends us his regiment for the next two battles- and it rocks faces off. Cavalry = awesome.

image022.jpg

Good old Sven Carlsson. That's quite an upgrade to the literally useless infantry squads the Carlsson militia consisted of in Shadow of the Horned Rat.

image005.jpg

 Morgan! Orc forces ahead. The greenskins are in disarray, we can take them by suprise.
 Assemble the troops! We will surprise them with sharp steel.

Battle 2 - Ambushing the Greenskins

This is hilariously easy, but it still took me some tries to get it right. Why? Oh, you'll see.

We are at a great advantage and know where the orcs are coming from. Better still, they don't know we are there. We will lay a trap.

image008.jpg

image009.jpg

image010.jpg

As you can see, our ranged regiments are in plain sight. Morgan and Carlson's horsement, however, are hidden amongst the trees. The plan is to shoot at the advancing orcs and weaken them and make them go for our archers and the cannon and then surprise sex them from the back with our mobile cavalry. Let's go for it! To battle!

image011.jpg

The cannon draws the attention of the orcs, though we strangely seem to miss more often than we hit. Well, who cares- the important goal here is to make the orcs go for the cannon and the archers so we can weaken them with missile fire as they advance and sneak our cavalry into their backs.

image012.jpg

As you can see we - I - messed up. The pathfinding is kinda meh and I wasted too much time trying to get my cavalry to attack the orcs from behind, so they managed to get a bit close too comfort. And they are also being quite lucky, suffering few losses due to the fire of our archers and the cannon.

image013.jpg

The cavalry literally arrives in the last second, saving our ass and charging into the backs of the orc hordes, mopping them up rather easily.

 Let no one escape!

Badass. Well, we easily dispatch all the orcs, losing no troops... time to quit the mi-

image015.jpg

Fuck you, game.

Those are Boar Boyz. That's exactly what it sounds like, orcs riding on boars. With heavy axes. They are like a mix of cavalry and heavy infantry and very powerful. We regroup and get ready charge them before they arrive at our archers.

image018.jpg

Using our archers as bait, we make the Boar Boyz face our cavalry with their backs as they charge the Grudgebringer Crossbows. That's a shame for them, though, since we instantly order the crossbowmen to run away, then charge into the Boar's backs with our cavalry, decimating them. No mercy for green unpeople!

We are victorious! And lost a whole of 3 Carlsson Cavalry. Not bad. But what's this?

image019.jpg

An amulet? Actually, it's just the graphic for an amulet, which means "Miscallenous Magical Item". Some orcs dropped it- well, time to make a screenshot of it to pick it up- I hit F12, my FRAPS make screenshot button-... and the mission is quit. As it happens, F12 also is the button to quit a won mission. Yes, that's right, I had to redo the mission because of it- for a potion of strength. Wow. Here are the stats of the redone mission:

image020.jpg

Yeah, I hear you crying and moaning already in anguish: "N00b! Lost 2 men! U SUCK!". Yeah, I do suck. Screw you, faggots.

Here's the item we picked up- I gave it to the infantry.

image023.jpg

Well, let's ride on south and protect the local area from whatever made those orcs be so afraid, eh? We rest in Teufelbad, a town in the Border Princes. With a badass name, I do say - who wouldn't want to live in a town which is literally named "Devil's Spa"? Morgan always the chatterbox, we get treated to a little interlude.

image024.jpg

 You seem troubled, Klaus...
:x Teufelbad has become a town of fear and whispers. The townfolk murmur of hungry ghosts, pale faces peering into the windows. The unquiet dead.
 Maybe they are just rattled up at the prospect of greenskins at their doorstep.
 Greenskins wouldn't inspire this kind of... dread. This is something else, something unnatural. Let's hurry on south!
 When my men have filled their stomachs we will leave.
:x There is a man here whom I think you know. A wizard by the name of Luther Flamestrike.

image025.jpg

 Greetings Commander Bernhardt. It has been some time since I have spoken with you. And now you have need of me again!
 And why should I need you again?
 Look around you! Look at this haunted town! Dark magic in the air... and here I stand, a Bright Wizard to combat the dark.
:x A mage might prove invaluable, Morgan. Who knows what's up ahead?
 Well... you were my mentor twenty years ago, Klaus... And your advice has usually been sound. Very well! Join us, Flamestrike. Now let's get back on the road, to face whatever is waiting for us.

And off we go-

image026.jpg

With HIM.

Seriously, what good can a robe-wearing faggot do? He's going to be totally useless. Let's drag him into the next battle for the lulz and forget about him thereafter. A moments later, due south-

image027.jpg

:x Morgan! Grissburg town up ahead. It's under attack by the living dead.
 Flamestrike warned us that we were heading into the dark... he meant the dark on the other side of the grave- the living dead.
 ZOMG! ORLY! Seriously, don't tell me you didn't expect undead after all this build-up. You're such a faggot.
Uh, sorry. He actually says:
 Then we will make the living dead just plain dead ( ). Attack!

Battle 3 - The Evil Dead

This battle is fun. Why? Well, there is innocent townsfolk running about on the town square and so we have to make sure we don't hurt any civilians.

image031.jpg

...and that is exactly why we place our troops right in front of the townsquare so that the cannon is aimed straight at the innocent people.

image032-1.jpg

The undead advance veeeeery slowly, giving us all the time in the world to hit them with the cannon and the crossbows.

image028.jpg

Those are zombies... and they move as slowly as.... zombies.

Enter  !

 Even the undead burn!

Time to use fagz0r-

image033.jpg

...wow. He can toss a fireballs like that Grudgebringer Sword. I am underwhelmed. We'll get that guy killed since he's so useless-

image034.jpg
... :!:

image035.jpg
:!: :!: :!:

...the undead FLEE. How can undead even have morale? They flee from the fury of Fagz0r... who just threw 6 fireballs at the regiment, cutting them into half and making them into living torches... I guess you shouldn't make fun of people in robes lest they set you on fire. He's still pretty weak though... I mean, our cannon could have done the s-

image040.jpg
...

image041.jpg

image045.jpg

...Okay okay he may stay... Fucking awesome. This spell will -kill- every undead it hits. This means if there are 10 undead in a line... Also, it looks cool. While our cannon and the archers pelt the undead, our Bright Wizard Luther runs around like a maniac and sets things on fire. Works for me.

image047.jpg

KAMEHAMEHA~~~

image048.jpg

Yeah... there's not much to this mission except for some Bright Wizard kicking serious ass. I spared you the repetitive waves of undead since it was basically the same scene thrice- archers weakening them, canonballs smashing them and the wizard being generally badass. And they laughed when he played with dolls as a kid!

And Commander Bernhardt? He spent the battle playing cards with Carlsson.

image049.jpg

*Final Fantasy Victory Fanfare*

After the tiring and difficult battle, in Grissburg...

image051.jpg

:x Zat's better. Now ze undead are as quiet as ze grave. (I couldn't resist. It's so awesome-sounding.)
 I expected to slay greenskins, not wage war on living corpses. Why did the dead walk this region?

image052.jpg

I forgot who that was. But that's an awesome hat.

 The dead walk in many regions.
 Ah, Mathias- Fancy meeting you here. Have you taken some time off from burning innocent women as witches? (I knew it. That hat just screams "inquisitor".)
 I told you before! Do not call me Mathias! Address me by my proper title, Witch-Hunter General ( :o ) and supreme authority on all abominations, whether it be witchcraft or necromancy. So show respect, Bernhardt.
 Call me... COMMANDER (   ).
 I warn you. Do not incur my anger. I am the surgeon of sin. I cut it out wherever I find it. Where there be witches I burn them. Sorcerers I put unto the long torture until death. Wizards who traffic with unclean spirits meet with swift retribution at my hands, or the hands of my priestly servants. No sinner escapes my righteous wrath!
 No sinner could outrun your judgment, Mathias. Injustice is swift.
 Be careful what you say, Bernhardt. (I TOLD YOU, IT WAS COMMANDER GODDAMN) One wrong word could condemn you. Just one wrong word and if the undead don't destroy you, I will. Now, do you want to hear my news or not?
 You mean you have something worthwhile to say for once? Go ahead and say it.
 The undead are many, so many. I have seen numerous packs of them to the south and heard witnesses describe armies of corpses shambling along the southern lands.
 So... the dead walk to the south. Perhaps they are the force that panics the orcs into a stampede?
 Yes commander. I feel sure the undead are the cause of the migration of the greenskins from the south.
 Even the devil-sworn orcs flee the dead who walk. We must report this to the emperor immedeately, Bernhardt.
 As I said- Call me COMMANDER, Mathias. We are heading for Altdorf. You can trot along behind us if you like. Men! We march for Altdorf at first light!

To be continued...
(...if you haven't fallen asleep by now. There's a choice coming up, and a difficult and rather epic mission if you make the right one.)

What's your tactics concerning armor? Buy all you can afford, making troops tougher, but more expensive to reinforce or just let them go naked?
You decide. SotHR didn't allow me to upgrade anything so I am hesistant doing so. You decide, peeps.

Go upgrade the Grudgebringer cavalry - you're not likely to lose a lot of them, since they're pretty damned fearsome, but if some do manage to get killed, your losses won't be as serious.

Update #2 - I am awesome. (At the super-easy missions... :? )

Welcome back to Let's Play Dark Omen. Our first choice is up and coming and since I can't sleep because of the noise outside I might as well write some more Dark Omen goodness for my one, two faithful readers.

image003.jpg

Last time we were defending a town from undead and we're now on our way back to Altdorf to report this to the emperor. Let's zoom straight to him as we deliver the news!

image004.jpg

:!: I presume you have something of interest to report.
 I've encountered bands of the undead in the border princes. You may find that hard to believe.
:!: It comes as no surprise. Since you've left I have been hearing similar reports. Carlsson- I need you to return to the Border Princes and deal with this menace. I give you reinforcements.
 Thank you... now I must leave. I wish you well.
:!: As for you, Bernhardt- it is my wish that you ride with the reinforcements bound for Helmgart. And as it happens the town of Bogenhafen is on the way and you will provide an escort for my cousin. I believe you do not have met my cousin. Countess Isabel from Liebowiz (I think).

image005.jpg

Enter the Countess

 Commander Bernhardt! Even though we have not met there are many tales of your military victories.
 There are few tales recounting my defeats, countess. We will gladly provide an escort.
 You have my thanks. I shall place my safety into your hands and place my personal guards under your command for the journey.
 I hope I shall prove worthy of your trust.
 I shall ride with you to Bogenhafen and keep my eye open for any... (long pause) sin.

We ride towards Bogenhafen- but alas, on the way-

:x A band of brigands is headed this way, their weapons drawn!
 We will move to attack them - guard the countess with your life, Klaus!

Battle 4 - The Great Clash

I was pretty tired when I made this run the first time and forgot to deploy any troops but the wizard, so it ended like this:

image002.jpg

Now, this would make a boring mission report, just using the wizard and the cavalry, so instead I made this-

image006.jpg

>_>
Sorry, I was too tired to control more regiments! We know the enemy is somewhere up the road to the northeast. If we look at the map we can see an alluring hill... getting the wizard and the crossbow up there would make the mission a piece of cake, so that's what we will do...

image007.jpg

Ow! We are under fire from the very hill we wanted to settle on! This won't be tolerated. The cavalry charges up the hill and destroys the bandit bowmen which are the best bandit melee unit. Well, not really, but the dice were against me and they would always killl at least one Grudgebringer in melee. Always. Even when fully armored.

image008.jpg

Crush them!

While we fight the bowmen our crossbows and the wizard ascend the hill, now having a great view on all the advancing brigands. Flamestrike is getting a bit giddy- sure, he was allowed to burn some candles and the odd sheet of paper but that was barely enough to contain him. Hence we allow him to unleash his fury on the brigands!

image009.jpg

Flaaaaming-

image010.jpg

...Skuuuuull!

image011.jpg

Kaboom!

image030.jpg

This is another awesome spell of the Bright Wizard. The Flaming Skull only costs two spellpoints. It will not only usually set three, four, five weaker units on fire, no- it also has a chance of making an enemy regiment flee!

image012.jpg

Just like those brigands that are easily picked off by our crossbows.

image013.jpg

There's quite a few of them left, but since we're on a hill and have two deadly ranged attackers - the powerful crossbowmen (and accurate!) and our insanely overpowered wizard - we can afford letting them come close...

image014.jpg

...and then burning them and leaving nothing but charred corpses!

image015.jpg

Those guys just don't give up, huh?

image016.jpg

Briiiight Eyes...

image017.jpg

...burning like fire~

image018.jpg

Wizard. Fire. Badass.

This battle was, I admit, very boring. All we did was take the hill and from there burn everything that moved, the crossbows killing off what we didn't cremate with hellfire. Let's wrap this up.

image019.jpg

A necromancer? Why is he with some bandits? Grudgebringers, apprehend him!

image020.jpg

CHAAAARGE the necro-

Yeah... no necromancer. No matter what you do, he teleports away, spewing threats, never to be seen again. We're left with many questions.

image021.jpg

Swinging his sword ponderously through the inept brigand bowmen, Morgan thinks about why a necromancer was here and why they were apparently trying to get the Countess...

Victory!

image022.jpg

Meh!
However- thanks to pkt, who told me to get some armor I had a good excuse to replay the mission...

image001.jpg

Put that in your pipe and smoke it! Trouble is though... I forgot to save so I will have to do it again before the next mission. Joke's on me!

Anyway, after the battle-

image023.jpg

:x One of the attackers reached ze countess's carriage before I could cut him down. He had this letter on him, showing the countess's portrait along with orders to locate her. Look at the seal. It's outlandish, is it not?
 Why did they attack a carriage with an armed escort? There's something wrong here, deeply wrong! What's going on commander?
 I'd say the attack was a diversion- while most bandits fought some had the chance to identify you and confirm your location. But I shall not allow you to come to harm. You have my word of honour. My personal word. Now- we best make speed!

We arrive at Bogenhafen a few hours later...

image024.jpg

 Welcome to Bogenhafen. At last.
 Ambushes have a way of slowing my progress a little.
:x We were ambushed on ze road. The attackers were acting under the command of an unknown force. The real target was the countess.
 Is that so? That's interesting news... I wonder whose orders they were fulfilling? What do you think, Bernhardt?
 Call me COMMANDER.
 You say that once too often...

image025.jpg

 Haaa! Commander! I am so glad you are here- we found a letter in the town shrine... just what does it all mean?
 It might help you if you told me what is in the letter.
 What? Ho yes! See for yourself!

image026.jpg

 To the feeble folk of Bogenhafen: Beware the warning! Death has a hundred hands and walks a hundred ways. Death waits closeby but not for you if you are wise. You will surrender Countess Isabella to me and death will leave you to your wretched little lives. Refuse to surrender and death will come to your town with a hundred soft footfalls. Dark is upon you.
 Look at the seal of this letter! It bears the same mark as the one carried by the brigands!
:x Morgan! We'll lose time if we stay. They need us at Helmgart! But it is up to you.
 Well I am not staying. I am not lifting a finger to help this wretched town. It is probably full of heretics anyway! You'll see me again, Morgan... count on it.

image027.jpg

Now what should it be? Do we defend Bogenhafen and delay the trip to Helmgart, possibly risking it being overrun before we get there or do we abandon the little town because, frankly, that undead attack sounded pretty intimidating. A hundred soft footfalls... If we stay we'll most likely be heavily outnumbered.

You decide-

A: Defend Bogenhafen
B: Ride for Helmgart

B. Ride for Helmgard. We were paid to do our job as mercenaries, not chosen ones that help every grandma across the road.

I like this reasoning. The countess is not to be had either the choice :)

If I recall correctly, you do get a banner that renders troops immune to fear (that can be bad as they won't ever break combat, even if ordered) if you stay. But you know this already. Metagaming FTW!

Stay, if only to embarrass the guy who acts as if he has a second pointy hat hidden up his bum.

Note: Death has a hundred hands and walks a hundred ways.
So each bit of Death that walks has only one hand?

All right, all done, this and the next mission. Sheek is going to get angry at the losses- but I can't say more without spoiling too much.

Update coming soon, maybe today or tomorrow. I already have the screenshots. There's also another choice upcoming so get mentally prepared for another voting after the next update- it's not a branch, it's an entirely optional mission.

PS: We have 4681 (!) coins loose change. Should we buy some more armor for the cannons, the infantry or the crossbows or just save it- you never know what's coming up, after all.

Bonus: Since I forgot to save after the Brigand mission I replayed it and saved 300 coins- here are the results:

ENGREL2007-10-1409-01-44-54.jpg

Sorry, sheek. I know I shouldn't have lost that crossbowman.

Edit: I'd like my first post to have a table of contents, with links to each chapter of this LP. How do I do that?

Edit: About experience-
If you've been wondering what the experience points are good for- Each unit that is not a wizard has 3 levels it can reach on top of its starting level. When they reach level 1, they gain +1 Weapon Skill (Stats are not displayed in Dark Omen, but still exist, just like in Shadow of the Horned Rat). This means the unit has a higher chance of hitting the enemy. Level 2 gives +1 to Strength - this means the unit has a higher chance of actually damaging the enemy. And at level 3 the unit gains +1 Wound which means- Umm... how to express this- listen up.

When units fight, they compare their WS, Weapon Skill. The winner has hit the target and now has a chance to damage the target, if he succeeds his strength roll compared to the toughness of a target regiment. Now, if he does succeed, the target regiment has a saving throw that depends on its armor- we bought 5 armor for our cavalry which means they have a really good chance to completely shrug off a blow, even when hit and failing their toughness check against the enemy's strength. However, if they FAIL this armor save, the hit , wounded soldiers in the regiment lose 1 Wound, which is like HP. They die at 0 HP. Level 3 means that 1 HP units live TWICE as long (in theory) and 2 HP units live 50% longer due to gaining another +1 to the 2, resulting with 3 Wound.

Missile units gain, instead of a higher chance to actually damage an unit, just higher accuracy at level 2. No biggy since our crossbows are stronger than bows right out of the box.

Wizards just gain 1 more spell to their spellbook every level. They hit level 1 at 1000 XP, all other units at 2000 XP. The Grudgebringers Cavalry are nearly there, as are the crossbows. The cannon should be at 1000 XP soon, almost.

Edit: Oh, and we can equip one more magic item on an unit each level! That's quite important.

This great game has quite a few of these good and difficult choices. You didn't say whether the countess is moving on or staying with us (and I don't remember). If she stays with us, then stay and fight to impress the girls and jeopardize the kingdom (and show you are actually a goody-two-shoes despite the scars and rudeness).

See that small icon looking like a sheet of paper right next to "Posted: Sun Oct 14, 2007 11:18 am" ? Right-click > copy link location, and there you have the URL to that particular post.

Countess stays. Remember, we have her along to escort her to Bogenhafen, no more. So if we had taken the other choice... well, who knows. Zombie-rape, anyone?

Thanks, pkt.

Edit: If we buy max armor for everyone now, even the cannon, the infantry I never use and the crossbowmen (who are doing something wrong if they get into melee) we will have 1600 coins left.

And it nets you a couple of units of infantry, not to mention that assaulting that bloody tower is a helluva lot easier than defending it.

Hey Jasede, how do u get this to work? Are you using any programs, or did it just work when you clicked "play" ? I reinstalled this game a couple of years ago, but I never got it to work under XP, would love to play it again..

Oh, and great thread, btw.

I already bought a cavalry-man back. If you get the "win" screen, then buy reinforcements, you can still click back to the win screen, but it will already list the new regiment size.

Yes, there's a consequence, and later on there will be more of this.

Gods, can you imagine how impossible this game would be if they never allowed you to replace troops? The campaign is pretty god damn long Sovy, by the end you'd almost certainly be facing down the armies of the damned with only a single crossbowman.
