Yet another preview from the boys at GameSpy, this time featuring Taldren<a>'s multi-platform action-CRPG in the future, [url=http://www.black-9.com/]Black 9. They cover various aspects of the title, including the character "classes", and this on the magic:

Magic is represented in an interesting way, too. Ditching the Final Fantasy way of casting spells, Black 9 takes an undeniably futuristic approach, instilling players with the power of "nano-tech." Nano-tech is a new revolution in medical science -- microscopic robots, injected into the human body, repair organic matter in a manner that would otherwise be impossible for a surgeon's hands to accomplish. Take that process a few steps forward and you have thousands of mini-bots, all working in unison to create things like wind storms, lighting attacks, or fiery onslaughts. Yes, it's a bit far-fetched, but it all makes a twisted sort of sense. Since they are so tiny, it'll be interesting to see how Taldren decides to visually represent the little mechanisms. During my demo of Black 9, nano-tech was only discussed, never shown (much like a lot of the other parts of the game).

Throwing nanobots around as spells is a little silly. The whole psychic power thing seems a little better than a justification in engineering.
