Why do devs keep putting physical camera limitations in their engines? Is it really cool to make games that look like they were filmed through a cheap lens?

Look at these examples and despair:

Now that I think about it, I think Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth had some shit too in the screen that made it all unfocused and fuzzy looking, and no, I'm not just talking about the madness effects. I know it was supposed to make the game more atmospheric and tension-giving, but I didn't like it. Good game otherwise.

Overuse of shitty screen effects in horror games: Check.

Other than looking through some sort of optics it should be optional, but I don't think it'll ever bother me nearly as much as for example excessive bloom or dumb DoF.

Overall about uniform fidelity reduction can sometimes improve game's looks, by masking the deficiencies in fidelity of the assets themselves. It's the case with some old games looking better in lower resolution (as without scene detail saturating the display res the start looking barren and sterile) and it might be the case with modern postprocessing, so as long as it isn't painful to look at, annoyingly fake or just plain fucking retarded it might work.

Some effects i make sure to deactivate before i even start playing:

- Bloom (depends on the game)
- Motion Blur
- Film Grain (who the fuck thought this wuold be a good idea?)
- Lens Flare (if it's an option)
- Color Correction (aka, 1 single color filter over everything)
- Depth of Field (I have astigmatism, this is a guaranteed headache)

I don't see the point of covering the screen with exaggerated, blinding effects. Shooters are games that are supposed to give you as much visual feedback as possible to help your performance, but how the fuck can i shoot precisely if half the map is made of neon and the other half is blurry because depth of field/motion blur? It's not immersive, it's fucking bullshit.

Although:
-Bloom is ok when very subtle and games designed with it in mind may have no other means for emphasizing strong light sources.
-Color Correction - DX:HR looked better with it than without, some games, like Divinity 2 also use color filters to non-detrimental effect.
-DoF - 2 exceptions: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: CoP along with any other game that uses DoF for stuff like making your sights blurry when focusing on objects in the distance and making other stuff blurry when focusing on object in your hands, and, bizarrely enough Skyrim. While I'm not sure the way Skyrim uses DoF is what DoF is meant to do - Skyrim uses it just for underwater, actually limiting visibility when the weather is bad (works better than just alpha blended fog) and only goes liberal with it when you're in the menus and crisp distant background would just be a distraction. Completely unexpected from company that made Oblivion with its Tzar Bomba ground zero bloom.

Thanks video games, I always wanted to know what it felt like to be a colorblind, myopic, light sensitive man!

What's with this whole dirty camera thing in games too? I was playing BF4 today (bored out of my mind and decided to buy a dudebro shooter) and half the time you're playing you can't even see what's going on. It feels like the developers watched Battlefield Earth and thought "hey, throwing dirty at the camera totally worked for that movie, we should do it for our game!"
