I kind of know what you mean - I would sort of argue though that she is revealed to be in a dark place pyschologically later in the game which is probably linked to the whole overly-optimistic thing she has got going and the link with Nay that you are probably aware of from the early game....
Yes, she got much better as character in second part of the game and her final genometrics levels.
