Bay12 games has released a new version of their great realtime dwarf simulator Dwarf fortress. You can download the freeware game here. The new release seems to be mainly about eliminating some bugs and annoyances as well as a few performance improvements. Find the full changelog here.

Please also take note of Codex-member Maydays great and informative thread about the game, he has so far been doing a very good job at helping us DF-newbies out.

Yes, I realize I said I would propably not do many news on roguelike updates anymore... Hey, it's Dwarf Fortress, mkay? Also I didn't even notice there was a new version out until I saw Maydays thread, so I hope this will suffice as a "thanks" for that.

Well, I plan to do a feature where I hand out the news in compressed form, mixed with some wild ranting and mini-LP like thingies - people were a bit worried that the frontpage might become flooded a little, I think. I'll definitely re-evaluate that a few weeks from now, though.

I dig roguelike coverage, but not for bug-fix releases. Wait until a significant update like the last one for DF comes along.

Agreed. This is pretty much just a minor patch, following the one a few weeks back.

Definitely,

but I couldn't find any news for that significant release, so I did them for this one :)

Next couple releases are focusing on bug squashing. I do ever so hope Toady makes the code more efficient. My low-end computer only manages 25 fps with weather and temperature turned on. :(

25 fps with ASCII graphics? Thats some massive bloat.

Yeah, but you gotta admit, it's nice to see all the computational power going toward something instead of just pushing polygons around a screen.

Awwwwww... that's so sweet of you, Nedrah ;)

Hey, I knew you'd like it. Now come here, give me a man hug. Hey... HEY! HANDS ABOVE THE WAISTLINE, PAL! :)

.....

See, you actually have a thread were you help people (me among them) out with something, as in, you're actually being constructive. That needs some mentioning.

Like soil erosion? ;)

By the way, polygon pushing is done by the GPU not the CPU, but, yeah, I agree with you there. I think DF just needs some threads to fix its lag.
