The game is indeed awesome. If Homeworld is the space Warcraft then Nexus is equivalent of games like JA2 and SS2 (although not turnbased, the game moves at a slow pace and has a pause function.) You can even make "called shots" like in say Fallout with shield piercing lasers to cripple a reactor or destroy the shield generator.

I'm a huge fan of the capitol ship battles in Freespace 1 and 2 as well. I got goosebumbs during the Sathanis/Colossus duels. :D

Nexus kinda captures that feeling some times. The game looks great and the attention to detail is fantastic.
