I don’t powergame on 1st playthroughs, but I find it to be a fun goal on a 2nd.

Problem is I usually don’t have a deep enough understanding of the mechanics by 2nd playthrough to powergame very well.

Are there any good resources which detail the mechanics of RPGs in depth?

I mean, I know there’s gamefaqs but sometimes they merely tell you what to do w/o actually explaining the mechanics in sufficient depth such that you yourself can discover the optimal builds/strats.

Depends on the game. For the Infinity Engine games such as Baldur's Gate, my blog is a good resource.

Pope Amole II has a youtube channel where he tears apart the mechanics of assorted crpgs. Might be helpful?

Use the specific game’s wiki then, you can read up on all the mechanics, items, levels, etc. without being told what to do.

Some games (mostly older ones) have very helpful manuals as well that go in depth on each mechanic and stat, and are written by the devs themselves. If you have a digital version look in the game files for one or look it up online.
