"Starshatter is not an open-ended freeform game in the style of Elite or Starflight. It's really more a spiritual descendent of military space combat sims such as Freespace and Klingon Academy, combined with a dynamic campaign engine similar to that in F-22 Total Air War. If I had to pick one game to compare Starshatter to, I would pick Babylon 5: Into The Fire. I conciously tried to incorporate as many ideas from their dynamic universe as I could (for which I thanked them individually in the credits)."
