  1. Your favorite strategy games.

With late game tech you can have as many cities as you want. But that's not true for most of the game. Early on overexpanding absolutely is detrimental. The core issue I have with Civ5 is not so much conquest-related. It's that it is often not worth settling empty quality land which is also...
  2. Your favorite strategy games.

Civ5 is the Civ game for people who don't want to build an empire. That's the deal with the 'tall' play talking point. Of course, you can build large and powerful cities in other Civ games. The actual meaning is 'I can't be arsed to manage more than 5 cities'. Which is fair enough. But there are...
  3. Any Strategy games with good and smart AI?

Thinker is the one to try if you are looking for good AI in particular.
  4. 4X The Unsurpassed Brian Reynolds' Alpha Centauri thread

Power is terrible except in some rare circumstances. Industry is a massively more important stat than Morale. If you don't want the Morale hit or diplomatic repercussions of Wealth keep the default Values setting.
  5. Civilization 7 is officially in development, Firaxis confirms

For MP you are right. In SP you can sit in a corner and do culture things behind a shield of diplomacy. On really big maps Spaceship and Culture wins are viable in MP too because there can be several superpowers and killing one of those off is very difficult and dangerous even for the greater...
  6. Anyone feel that Sid Meier games are fun for awhile then get boring quickly

I get around this problem by playing Pbem/Pitboss. A half hour turn is perfectly acceptable in these game modes.
  7. In Progress Let's Multiplay Alpha Centauri - the Cognito Elite Club's sport of choice returns

I had quite a bit of fun in the game but it also reminded me why my usual MP games (Civ4 Pitboss) turn off tech trading and heavily restrict diplomacy. Initially, I had a huge economic advantage from the settling phase where I must say performance of my competitors was a bit underwhelming...
  8. Civilization VI - Now available, so you can sink all your free time into it

Tall play is an absurd bugbear. If you don't want to build an Empire don't play an empire building game. Or stick to tiny maps or 5-city challenge runs if you don't enjoy managing many cities. If the game mechanics themselves indulge that kind of thing it hurts the game (cf. Civ5).
  9. TBS Panzer General / Fantasy General / Panzer Corps Introduction

Yeah, thanks for hint. I didn't manage to get my old copy working properly on Win10.
  10. In Progress Let's Multiplay Alpha Centauri - the Cognito Elite Club's sport of choice returns

Holy mackarel, that base. How about it obb? Wanna trade some of your nerve gas bombers vs some of my formers?
  11. "Cheating" AIs that nevertheless pose an enjoyable challenge

Civ4 AI bonuses increase with game era. So late game building and research discounts are higher than early/mid game ones.
  12. 4X The Unsurpassed Brian Reynolds' Alpha Centauri thread

Optimally, early on you should try to limit base sizes to 1, only going up to 2 when construsting a colony pod. It's not necessarily fun plaing like that. Efficient drone control is always tricky. Some combination of police units with Nonlethal Methods if you don't use FM, certain Secret...
  13. In Progress Let's Multiplay Alpha Centauri - the Cognito Elite Club's sport of choice returns

The HGP does kinda give you a talent because it operates after the hard drone control has been applied. Say you have one MP unit in place that changes one drone to a worker. The HGP then improves the worker to a talent and the base does not riot at size 2. Normal psych applies before hard drone...
  14. TBS Comparing Civ 5 vs Civ 6

    Multiplayer is typically siimultaneous turns.
