    I suspect that the SP portrait pack(s) aren't compatible with Co8 5.6.x. portraits.mes and portraits in general have been modified rather significantly - and likely since those packs were released.

    Strange. If you're not too far along yet I'd suggest you start over, and reactivate Co8 5.6.0 for good measure. (Activate another module such as vanilla, and then activate 5.6 again.) The spell list bug is known and was fixed in the 5.6.1 patch.

    Did you by any chance console in any items? ToEE usually crashes like that (straight to desktop) when you try to load a save that has an 'illegal' (i.e. bad proto) item in it. That could also happen with the shopmap bug mentioned above, but only if the game was saved on the shopmap.
