Game News Underworld Ascendant Update #40: Deep Slugs of Upper Erebus

giggle This from a series where every puzzle so far has been either skippable or solvable via brute force, with the masterpiece being an entire area dedicated to the examination of student mages which you can cross almost unequipped and without casting spells... :)) suddenly they think they can...

What game introduced you to the genre?

dungeon master and captive on the Atari ST edit: i still buy Captive's one-man pixel art as better game illustration than a lot of modern stuff

    The value(?) of repetitive RPGs

shin megami tensei: strange journey owner has logged on if they stripped the constantly-having-to-return-to-the-ship and having-to-beat-the-game-three-times tendencies out of that game we'd all have a minor classic on our hands

Letting go of the checklist: Zombra says you shouldn't do everything in RPGs

mostly agreed with Zombra. I do prefer to skim conversation trees when they're getting big, sample dip the houses in a settlement instead of looting them all systematically and so forth. other rpg veterans are like sponges, absorbing all the information and valuable material in an area in one...

How many mods does it take to make Skyrim not suck? 300.

a good mod of the game would keep the graphics and mood in place while simply removing all the NPCs. this instantly cuts the majority of the game's annoying content and saves you from being disappointed by the game's ending sequence

    "The Elder Scrolls Problem"

I wish you hadn't all complained about the Daggerfall/Morrowind style wikiNPCs because although they were impersonal, accessing one of them basically added up to a gestalt "town experience" where you picked up some directions and local colour without having to sit through any irritating...

Game News Underworld Ascendant Update #31: Introduction to Marcaul

the entire office staff of ""Looking Glass"" is spinning slowly on an office chair right now, tapping a pen thoughtfully against their lips and glancing at their monitor to see if it's gone into power saving mode

Perfecting the turn based gun fight!

I feel like you need some sort of save vs going into shock system for when a character gets shot. then if someone is prone/in shock they can be executed by anyone trained in teh military ways. ie... don't get too attached to yer characters. also in a world where gunfighting is rife, armour is...

    Cadaver, The Immortal, Hillsfar...

what Cadaver achieves in graphical eloquence with its 16-colour metallic palette still has to be seen to be believed. Bitmap Bros were miles ahead of the game back then

1eyedking Top 10 things that RPGs don't do anymore

It's been a while since I've found a really good shop in a modern RPG - they're always too straight to the point with their stock, just potions and class kit stuff and random eq you'd never consider buying. I miss seeing overlapping gear (old D&D games), region-specific miscellania (Morrowind)...

Trigger the codex with a statement.

there were a lot of surface level reasons people gave to explain their dislike of Ultima 8, its over-reliance on leaping and positional problems being the big sticking point, but there was a darker reason for the game's rejection: Ultima 7 had eased its fans into a lazy victory-lap style of...
