Honestly, as far as I'm concerned, we have departed any historical frame of reference as soon as we start talking about mercenaries vs. aliens.

We are now firmly in the realm of fantasy. Trying to adhere to realism here is a fools errand.

I was just excited to talk about WW2 :)

Quite a lot of women worked as nurses, radio officers or in other noncombat roles in WW2.
Just want to add that tons of women served in combat roles on the Eastern Front, although usually in all female units from what I understand. Western female service members would occasionally engage in combat out of necessity
Tons of kids served in combat roles on the Eastern Front (on Germany's side at the end of the war). Guess that means seeing 12 year olds fighting in a sci-fi army shouldn't raise any eyebrows.
wouldn't bother me, if it made sense, for same reason. fighting in sci-fi army does not preclude you from having your entire civilization destroyed. If it makes you feel better to throw a tantrum about it though, go ahead.

There are some okay examples of child and female soldiers in sci-fi but it always includes dystopian wars and desperate struggles.

It's a real shame HBO cancelled this series.
